It was interesting to see how Benjamin Orlow's sculptures inside the Nordic Pavilion have evolved over five months. They are made of raw, unfired clay, so gravity and changes in temperature & humidity do their work over time.

A beautiful Nordic dialogue between Benjamin Orlow (Finland), Klara Kristalova (Sweden), and Tori Wrines (Norway) - three distinct artistic voices brought together in a shared reflection on nature, identity, and the poetic possibilities of the Nordic landscape.

In Lust for Life, Klara Kristalova gives form to a body caught in a state of transformation. Modelled in glazed stoneware, the figure appears part human, part vegetal: limbs and trunk merge into an anatomy whose boundaries remain deliberately unstable. Kristalova’s sculptural language frequently inhabits this threshold, drawing on the visual logic of myth and fairy tale to produce creatures that feel at once familiar and resistant to classification.

The work belongs to a broader practice in which metamorphosis becomes a way of unsettling fixed ideas of identity and species. Within the Nordic Countries Pavilion, where myth, material and the architecture of Sverre Fehn’s building are brought into close relation, Lust for Life acquires an almost fable-like presence. Its hybrid body suggests transformation less as an exceptional event than as a continuous condition: a space in which human and non-human forms remain porous, provisional and capable of becoming otherwise.

How Many Angels Can Dance on the Head of a Pin? ⭐️

I don't know the answer but I do know that – in addition to its rather fitting title – the Nordic Countries Pavilion at this year's Venice Biennale was by far my highlight of the visit! 💛

The title of the collaborative exhibition draws on the medieval philosophical question concerning how multiple entities can occupy the same space. Here, it opens onto broader reflections on coexistence at a time marked by increasing social, environmental and geopolitical division.

Bringing together works by Benjamin Orlow [FIN] @benjaminorlow, Klara Kristalova [SWE] @hundskogen, and Tori Wrånes [NOR] @closest_relatives, the exhibition transforms the pavilion into a sculptural, mythical environment where bodies, materials and perspectives interact in shifting and unstable ways.

Brilliantly curated by @annamustonen within the pavilion's iconic Sverre Fehn architecture.

Superb! Hurra! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Inspired by Nordic folklore, fairy tales, and the Finnish epic Kalevala, the Nordic Countries Pavilion at the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia transforms into a mythical landscape where sculpture, sound, and architecture merge.

How Many Angels Can Dance on the Head of a Pin? brings together artists Klara Kristalova (Sweden), Benjamin Orlow (Finland), and Tori Wrånes (Norway) in an exhibition that explores transformation, decay, renewal, and the interconnectedness of humans, animals, and nature through the universal language of myth.

Curated by Anna Mustonen, the exhibition also responds to the distinctive architecture of the Nordic Pavilion, designed by Sverre Fehn, using the building itself as an active part of the artistic experience.

Massive thanks to the amazing Jaakko Pallasvuo @avocado_ibuprofen and Gaile Pranckunaite @buster0friendly who created the typefaces and identity of the catalogue together with Max Hannus @beibsi_max for How Many Angels Can Dance on the Head of a Pin? - at the @nordiccountriespavilion at @labiennale curated by Anna Mustonen @annamustonen.

Also thank you to the iconic Steven Claydon @steven_claydon who wrote an incredible text about the work.

"The simulacrum lifted its sleepy lids and saw forms and colours it did not understand,
and lost in sounds it rehearsed fearful movements.

—Jorge Luis Borges, El Golem

Benjamin Orlow’s sculptural practice is grounded in a conception of the body as something brought into being through strain, invocation, and material resistance rather
than ideal form or symbolic resolution. His figures do not present themselves as stable objects but as precarious condensations of matter, gesture, and affect—animated before they are resolved, coherent only insofar as they are held together by tension. Like Borges’ Golem, Orlow’s sculptures move before they understand themselves...."

This year, thanks to our bursary schemes in partnership with Art Fund (@artfund) and the Paul Mellon Centre (@paulmelloncentr), we were able to welcome to London Gallery Weekend more UK-based and international curators than ever before.

Both schemes support visits from museum curators, helping to build lasting connections and encourage shared learning between the public and private sectors.

We’re grateful to each and every one of this year’s curators for engaging so generously with the gallery and events programme and making the most of this opportunity.

NORDIC COUNTRIES (FINLAND, NORWAY, SWEDEN) — HOW MANY ANGELS CAN DANCE ON THE HEAD OF A PIN?
Venice Biennale 2026 (@labiennale), Nordic Pavilion (@nordiccountriespavilion)

The works of Tori Wrånes (@closest_relatives), Klara Kristalov (@hundskogen), and Benjamin Orlow (@benjaminorlow) refuse resolution. Transformation is read as process rather than result: bodies disperse and recompose, structures remain provisional. Space becomes a lived condition in which sensations accumulate over time rather than resolving into clarity. Nothing is fixed. Nothing is concluded.

Three distinct artistic vocabularies converge in an exhibition that asks one of philosophy’s oldest questions, and answers it not with theology, but with the weight of physical presence, compressed into architecture.
