“Well it’s going a whole lot better than last January 7th,” i said to the Trader Joe’s cashier who asked about my day.

I was staging a home and was gobsmacked by the way the light filtered through the house that day.

I’d heard that there was a small fire in the Palisades, but I was in Hollywood, so no big deal. Someone will deal with it. Someone always deals with it.

Then after I got home, the sky turned and it kept turning for weeks. The next morning was apocalyptically worse. My dad Zelled me $100 to put gas in my car, because I couldn’t afford to evacuate if I needed to.

Recipe for a Broken Heart

Ingredients:

1 Bad Mood (fresh, preferably raw)
Crying, liberally sprinkled throughout
2–3 comfort shows on deck
A handful of people to talk to about it with (more if you can source them organically)
1 large pot of soup, curry, or stew
1 cup of tea, daily (I prefer herbal for this recipe)
Leaving the house, at least once a day
Optional but highly recommended: hitting the road for a few days to get perspective

My sweet baby guy went to Heaven on Saturday. I’m completely heartbroken.

Bok Choy was one of those dogs that everyone overlooks. He sat in the shelter for over a month before the angels @apurposefulrescue busted him out of there.

Eight pounds and eight years old with a wonky body, patchy hair and cataracts. But, I hardly batted an eyelash. That was my guy. Or maybe I was his girl? TBH, I don’t even feel like I had a choice in the matter. We were just meant to be.

I wasn’t even thinking about getting a dog, but when I bumped into @tinytownpets holding a little chicken of a dog in flannel cactus pajamas and a blue bandana that said “ADOPT ME,” I was toast.

The next few days were exactly like falling in love. I couldn’t stop thinking about him. I couldn’t wait to hold his floppy little body again. And before I knew it, he was tippy-tapping around my hardwood floors, making himself right at home.

Taking care of Bok Choy was like nurturing a rare, delicate butterfly. If you looked up the definition of sweetie-pie, you’d see his frowny little face. He was love and tenderness like I’ve never experienced.

Bok Choy was an angel, a baby sloth, a tiny, squishy buddha. He was bamboo in the wind.

He was profoundly resilient, living years longer than anyone expected, which I think is a testament to the healing power of love and good food.

In the end, his body broke down gradually and then all at once. And now he is free from all that pain, but I will spend the rest of my life longing to kiss those sweet, pouty black lips again.
