A studio dilemma…
Three works in progress, made from under paintings, cut into shapes and decorated.
Visitors have either loved or hated them.
I’ve never had such divided reactions-and nearly gave up.
I left them on the wall for ten days.
It’s surprising how other people’s reactions can shake your confidence.
But now I’m determined to finish them.
I want to see where they will take me. by @annbakerartist

A sketch book dilemma
In 2024 I started a sketchbook called Drawings. Whenever I learnt something from a
drawing, a course or a YouTube video I recorded it there.
Then one day made a full colour still-life across a double-page spread. Somehow I felt I had
broken the rules of my own book, and I stopped using it.
Now I’m finding drawings scattered through my other sketchbooks. I’ve even taken a few pages out, thinking
I might add them to drawings and start again.
But what about the pages of noses and mouths I began during a drawing faces course?
Do they belong with my face studies or in my drawing book?
Perhaps they can stay where they were made, and I just need a way of finding them again.
I’m thinking of making an index rather than moving everything around.
Do you keep seperate sketchbooks for different subjects, or does everything end up where you happen to be working?m90 by @annbakerartist

Sketchbook dilemmas, part two: colour play.
I swatch colours all over the place. Then I find myself repeating experiments instead of
Building on what I have already discovered.
These two pages are in completely different sketch books.
One records red and green acrylic combinations
I was trying for a painting. The other is double page
spread of reds and greens made with Neo colour 11s.

I’d forgotten I had that other page to refer to.
I’m thinking of starting a Colour Play Index in my studio note book, a tiny swatch,
the colours I used, and a note saying which sketch book holds the full experiment.
First, I’ll need a simple way to identify my books.
Do you have a way of finding your colour experiments again? by @annbakerartist

I have at least 20 sketchbooks on the go, and none of them is finished. Some of them even have
dedicated jobs; faces, colour mixing, thumbnails, general experiments…..
But when I sit down to work, I usually grab which ever book is nearest.
Dilemma 1: draw flowers in the faces book. Suddenly it doesn’t feel like a faces book any more, so I stop putting faces in it.
Another general sketchbook is born.
Dilemma 2: I now have half filled books of wonderful random things. When I want to find a particular experiment,
I have no idea where to look. An hour later, I have found several golden nougats,
fallen down three rabbit holes and done no work or play.
Does this ring any bells with you?
I’m going to share more about my practice and these dilemmas over the
next little while. Yesterday I started a studio note book, hoping it might help me keep track of things.
We’ll see how that progresses! by @annbakerartist

I found the original sketch in a drawer a couple of weeks ago. I drew it in March 2024 and always liked the looseness and freedom in it. looking at it again, I wondered whether I could translate that feeling into a series of paintings. These four are what resulted. I really like the series- the colour the pattern and the way the shapes have developed. but somewhere along the way I think I lost some of the looseness that attracted me to the original drawing in the first place. So perhaps that is the next challenge: can I keep the colour and the pattern; but bring back more of that freedom? I’m psyching myself up to have another go-perhaps on paper rather than canvas next time-and see what happens. sometimes one series seems to lead straight into the next question. by @annbakerartist

One drawing, four directions.

I found this black-and-white still-life drawing in my sketchbook recently. I originally made it while doing the Helen Wells Still Life Lab course, and then it sat quietly in my sketchbook for quite a long time.

When I came across it again, I started wondering what it might become as a painting.

First came the red and black version.

Then I started playing with the idea of yellow in my sketchbook, which led to another painting.

From there I tried the idea on a yellow, blue and purple background, and finally pulled out one of my already-prepared canvases to see what would happen if I pushed the colour even further.

I love how one drawing can take you somewhere completely unexpected.

And I’m not sure this idea has finished with me yet!
