POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Hey everyone! I'm running a 5K to raise money for a cause that's near and dear to me. I've volunteered at this amazing camp for a few years and interviewed many people from it for my podcast. Please donate any amount! Here's the url but I'll put a link in my profile too.

Missing summer already, but it was glorious time with friends and family and babies and weddings and memorials and puppets in the heat and the city and then the trees and the lakes. Now it’s time for me and Skops to go back to school ‼️‼️‼️‼️ by @annbfaison

These two!! Wow. This episode is so powerful. These two sisters quickly became experts on how to support one another and themselves and their communities after the Eaton fire took their home and school (for Tessa). Tessa is the youngest guest I’ve ever had in the show and she is amazing. And Ella is incredibly articulate about how it feels to go through such a trauma and quickly learned how to best support herself and her friends. These two perfectly embody what I’ve learned from doing this show which is that peer support is the best support for kids. So this episode is up there as one of the best and it’s also THE SEASON FINALE of the mini season on the LA fires. I’m off to school so taking a break from podcasting but stay tuned for info on the next season.

This is a wonderful conversation with Michelle De Los Santos about trauma and loss in the wake of the Eaton Fire. Michelle lived right next to Eaton Canyon and is still displaced so she is part of the community of people affected by the fires. She’s also a mother of three teens and a trauma-informed therapist. So we had a great discussion about what she is seeing in her clients, many of whom are children and teens, and she has great advice for parents based on firsthand knowledge of the fires.

Unfortunately it’s not the best recording but if you don’t mind turning your volume up and down a bit, it’s passable. The content is worth the effort.

I’m winding down the season on fires so there will only be one more episode before I go on a bit of a hiatus. But the last episode is quite extraordinary. Stay tuned.

I loved meeting and talking to Falcon about the fires. He is a bright spark of a person and shared openly about what his family went through, during and after the fires in January. As an actor and preschool teacher, Falcon delights in children so we had a great time recounting what it was like to see Shrek The Musical performed by kids from Elliot Middle School, not long after their school burned down. It’s a great listen for anyone who wants to know more about how the fires in Altadena and Pasadena have impacted the community.

I’m so lucky to call these people my good friends and so grateful to have had them on the podcast! They were so good to talk to about the fires (I knew they would be) for their stories and perspectives on how it affected them in the context of the effects on the larger community. I’ve interviewed a few teachers for this season because they are on the front lines of dealing with the mental health of the kids after the fires and I loved how they put those observations alongside their own stories of recovery. I realized as we were speaking how intertwined the kids experiences are with the adults. We can’t necessarily separate them as a way to better understand the differences between how adults and kids respond to loss and trauma. But I do like to focus on the kids and we did that here. We also had fun because these two are always funny and uplifting and I’m so grateful for the conversation we had.

Staci Mitchell is a force. Playwright, Pan-African studies professor, yoga instructor, business owner, mother, and grandmother, to name just a few hats she has worn. I am honored to have her on the show to share the story of losing her beautiful home in the fires but also the incredible amount of support she felt from the community and the realization that she is “embodied history.” We also touched on her kids, the youngest of whom is still a teenager, about how they are doing. This conversation was expansive and grew my perception of Altadena. I hope it will do the same for you.

What a day! So grateful to be a transplant to this great city! So proud to have spent most of my life and raised a family here. It felt so good to be with the people of this wonderful city today, everyone so kind and generous with full hearts after a week of manufactured fear and anger. They want us to be afraid and today thousands turned out to stare down their tactics of filling our streets with police and military. There were people of all kinds! Young and old. People in wheelchairs and with walkers. People carrying children and pets and musical instruments. People handing out free water and food. I had a ball. Los Angeles, you’re the coolest and the sunniest and I love you. taken in Downtown Los Angeles by @annbfaison
