I’ve always loved fashion - and for years I built software that makes shopping frictionless.

But once I learned about the massive scale of clothing overproduction and waste, it changed my view on the industry.

As much as I wanted to work in fashion, I couldn’t stomach the idea of making more new clothes.

I figured there had to be a different way, a different system that minimizes waste and promotes buying fewer, better clothes.

This has been the driving force behind Next Season, my upcycled knitwear brand where everything is (hand)made on demand.

As consumers, we control where our money goes, what systems we invest in. And that’s a lot of power. Follow along to see our circular fashion journey ! taken in Brooklyn, New York by @annewarren__

Day 1 of knitting a Barragán-inspired dress for my cousin’s wedding next week. I really hope I can pull it off in time before I fly to Italy on Wednesday… ahh

When we set out to design the collection, we were initially inspired by the New York City Subway system. The collection is made out of NYC’s textile waste and it was only fitting to reference an institution of city infrastructure.

@badboymikey_official then also pulled in the work of mid-century painter Barnett Newman.

Barnett Newman, born and raised in NYC, was one of the foremost color field painters. He became known for his ‘zips’ of color across the canvas, and was an important influence on younger artists such as Donald Judd and Frank Stella. We visited @themuseumofmodernart to see his work first hand.

Newmn’s ‘zips’, along with the graphic, bright lines featured in NYC subway maps and stations, served as a starting point for our own designs for this collection.

I’m thrilled to publish the first in my series of illustrated interviews! I sat down recently with a great friend of mine, @annewarren__ , who’s been setting up a really cool, unusual business in Brooklyn: an upcycled knitwear company, @nextseason.nyc. Her designs are beautiful, and she is full of ideas and grand plans. I can’t wait to see where she goes with it.

It’s more of a ‘profile’ than ‘interview’, with several illustrations, all hand drawn with a dip pen and ink and watercolour, scattered through. It was a joy to work on and I’m very excited for where this project is going to take me. I already have some really interesting people lined up, with some very cool careers, but if you know (or are!) someone who might be interested to take part then I’d love to hear from you.

INSPIRATION: New York City Subway System

I’ve been meaning to share a bit of background about the inspiration for our (wip!) upcycled knitwear collection made of NYC’s textile waste.

I knew early on that I wanted it to be somehow NYC inspired (but not cheesy!) - and that I wanted to work with my brother @badboymikey_official on the collection design.

He thought to reference the NYC subway system, particularly the contrast between the gritty texture of the tiles / infrastructure and the clean lines of the iconic map and signage.

The subway was our starting point, will share more about our visual concept and design language in part 2! taken in New York City by @annewarren__

WEEK 8: We made a map!

From the very beginning of this project I thought, how cool would it be to make a map of all of the sweaters we collect, unravel, and remake?

And then if you buy an item from the collection, you’ll be able to trace the old sweaters that were unraveled and re-knit to make your unique piece.

This is just v1 (linked in bio) - will be adding more sweaters and metadata & views as we go. Can you tell I’m a former product manager ? 🤓

Also, a note on AI: I don’t normally use AI in my work (never ever ever for writing, image creation, or anything creative, and very very rarely for anything else). I have a lot of mixed feelings about AI. I did use chatGPT for the map though, it felt like a reasonable use case?

Shout out to @ojeremydelicious for helping me w/ setup and brainstorming !

Excited to experiment with sourcing from @helpsy and glad as always to be working with @badboymikey_official and @annie.mcw.designs on this project 💚 taken in New York City by @annewarren__

WEEK 7: Feeling a bit worried that I’ve been spending too much time content creating and not enough time knitting 😅

So ! This week I’m back at the machine testing knitweave swatches to really hone in on our final designs. Hoping we can finish samples by the end of ~Sept and start production early October… fingers crossed! taken in Brooklyn, New York by @annewarren__

WEEK 6: Unraveling ~40 donated sweaters to use for the @nextseason.nyc fall collection, made entirely out of NYC’s textile waste.

How many hours do you think it will take me to unravel them all ?? Tbh I’m curious too…

It’s not so difficult to do, but 40 is a lot to get through quickly 🤪 If you’re looking to try your hand at unraveling I’ve shared some tips here and also have a more detailed guide up on Substack! taken in Brooklyn, New York by @annewarren__

How does NYC recycle our old clothes? PART 3

I took a trip out to Eatontown, NJ to meet Dave Milliner, COO at @helpsy. Helpsy is the official clothing collector, aggregator, and sorter for NYC - with a mission to keep clothes out of the trash and to create honorable work.

Dave gave me an overview of the company & a tour of their operation. They collect clothes from donation bins and drives (like the one I visited hosted by @lesecologyctr). The millions of pounds of clothes they handle are bundled, rebundled, sometimes sorted, and resold to thrift chains and resellers all around the world.

The business of post consumer clothing collection, sorting & resale is a complicated one, especially as the volume of clothes increases and quality decreases. More and more of our excess and waste ends up in the Global South every year.

The more sorting we can all do, the better. And the less we buy, the better we buy, and the longer we keep what we have, the better too. I did a deeper dive in my newsletter last week if you’re interested to learn more! taken in New York City by @annewarren__

How does NYC recycle our old clothes? PART 2

I chatted w/ Kyndal Coleman, the Community Recycling Program Coordinator at @lesecologyctr to learn more about textile & e-waste recycling in NYC. They host events nearly every weekend, all over the city, so that New Yorkers have a convenient and accessible way to recycle our old stuff.

There is at least one event per community board - check the calendar here to stop by in your neighborhood: https://www.lesecologycenter.org/calendar/category/public-events-e-waste/

After meeting Kyndal, I volunteered at one of their collection events in Forest Hills, and sourced a bunch of sweaters for my project.

And in part 3 of this series, I take a tour of the city’s textile collector and sorter @helpsy to see where our old clothes go after they’re dropped off for recycling… taken in New York City by @annewarren__
