I have boring dreams. They’re usually about staplers. My daughter Clio, on the other hand, has magnificent, visionary dreams, which she very kindly allows me to poach for my books. ESCAPE is just such a book, based on a dream she had about freedom and thinking differently from others. Thank you, sweetheart. Someday I’ll figure out how to use the one about the streetlight. by @anniebarrowsauthor

I am pleased to report that after many years of trying to understand the entire history of the universe, I’ve got it! What’s more, I’ve written a book about it: MARGO AND THE ROCK. What’s even more, it’s going to be the most beautiful history of the universe in, well, the universe, because it will be illustrated by the wonderful Beatrice Alemagna (@beatricealemagna) and published by Neal Porter Books (@nealporterbooks). Hey Bay Area friends, as some of you know, my true calling is not writing books but creating April Fool’s jokes. And as the big day approaches, I will be leading a kids’ workshop on how to manufacture five (possibly six, depending on how you define the word “joke”) of my finest pranks. That’s FIVE guaranteed non-lethal ways to surprise your local grownup and add pep to the home on April Fool’s Day. On the day World War II ended, a neighbor ran to my Grandmother Edna’s house to tell the news: “Japan’s surrendered! The war’s over!” And from the porch, my Uncle Joe said, “That’s nothing. Edna’s sewing.” Sigh. Same here. I can’t see very well, my hands shake, and I get blood all over everything I sew. But there’s a rip in my new shirt, and I am brave. At least, along with the genes, I inherited my grandmother’s needle case. by @anniebarrowsauthor

Hooray! I’m delighted, not to mention kind of swollen with pride, to see STELLA & MARIGOLD by me and the wonderful Sophie Blackall (@sophieblackall) included in the Bank Street’s Best Children’s Books of the Year 2025 and designated a book of “Outstanding Merit,” no less! Thanks to the Children’s Book Committee, which made the selections and the Bank Street Center for Children’s Literature—not only because they like our girls, but for all their great work on behalf of children and children’s literature. It’s an honor to be in such splendid company.
