The Athenaeum’s 34th Annual Juried Exhibition’s last day is today! 42 artists were selected for this exhibition, chosen by internationally acclaimed photographer and artist Paul Mpagi Sepuya. The exhibition features 48 works by artists from across the San Diego–Tijuana region.

I would like to thank Jocelyn Saucedo Larson, Assistant Director, Administration and Exhibitions for coordinating and communicating so beautifully with the artists.

Have you seen the erosion of our beaches here in San Diego due to Hurricane Marie? Adding insult to injury, sea level on the California coast is set to rise a foot in October. El Niño is driving a Kelvin wave that puts the state at greater risk of coastal flooding. And that is what my series “Undertow” is about - anticipating what will remain after the ocean claims our coast. What will we remember? What will the ocean leave for us? Come see “Regarding Wave” @earth_house_hold @sdspace4art this Saturday from 6-8:30 pm during Open Studios. taken in Space 4 Art by @annieclaflin

𝓡𝓮𝓰𝓪𝓻𝓭𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓦𝓪𝓿𝓮
𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐧

Photography is bound to speed.

The camera arrests a fraction of time, extracting an image from the duration through which an experience unfolds.

In 𝓡𝓮𝓰𝓪𝓻𝓭𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓦𝓪𝓿𝓮, Annie Claflin complicates this accelerated instant by bringing the photograph back into contact with the body. Through soaking, folding, lifting, boiling, handling, water, salt, sand, pressure, gravity, and touch, the image re-enters duration.

The body returns to the photographic instant.

A photograph isolates an instant; a wave belongs to recurrence. One arrests; the other continues.

Against technological speed, the rectilinear grid and the human-made system’s impulse to capture, Claflin’s work returns the image back into contact with the hand, body, material, natural rhythm, and time.

The body that operates the camera, returns to encounter what the camera has captured.

“The Best Pressed Flowers” reminds me of summertime, picking flowers from the shore with my friends from out of town and pressing them in books so we could all take a piece of the coast back home with us. This preservation process is one I try to mimic in my work - it is an attempt to keep memories of the seashore alive.

You can see this piece in downtown San Diego through Open Studios @sdspace4art @earth_house_hold on September 12th from 6-8:30 pm. If you can’t make it to Open Studios on the 12th, please contact @augustine.archive for an appointment to see “Regarding Wave” at Earth / House / Hold.

Thank you to everyone who came out today to the opening reception of “Regarding Wave” @earth_house_hold . This series of photo-based works of the San Diego coast is really about Maine, and I appreciate all of the discussions had by all today about memory, haunting beauty, and our relationships with place. Thank you @augustine.archive for thoughtfully and carefully holding my work in your space.

“Regarding Wave” is open by appointment only through September 6th. I would love to walk you through the exhibition and hear your reactions. Contact: Meghan Berkeley Augustine at earthhousehold.com or DM me and we can make time to view the work. taken in Space 4 Art by @annieclaflin

Hi! My name is Annie Claflin @annieclaflin and I’m a photo-based artist located in San Diego, California. Over the next three days, I’ll be takjng over WPANYC’s IG account by sharing a multidisciplinary project titled “Undertow”. This series consists of photographs altered through submersion in various liquids, presented as archival pigment prints, inkjet print lifts in glass jars, and salt-water boiled photographs on cradled wood panel. The work addresses my personal experience with sea level rise, my love of the coast, and my attempt to mourn a disappearing place I consider home.

Here are two of my submerged photographs transferred onto transparency film and floated in jars.

1. “Molted”, 2026
Pigment, microporous coating of a pigment print, transparency film, acrylic paint, and glycerin in a glass jar
6.6 x 3.9 x 3.9 in

2. “Deep Roots”, 2026
Pigment, microporous coating of a pigment print, transparency film, acrylic paint, and glycerin in a glass jar.
