This year someone called me a poet for the first time ever. I quite liked the idea.
So here, for National Poetry Day 2026, is part of some spoken word I wrote for
Norfolk Saltmarsh: a fragile world
photography exhibition which happened over the summer.

It’s from the soundscape track Sanctuary. If you want to hear the whole thing check out Bandcamp, Spotify and other streaming services. Search Saltmarsh Project Sanctuary.

Pinkfoot geese in great flocks high in the sky,
Moving In raggedy skeins
Like strands of unravelling knitting,
A legion of squeaky cries.
Tiny sky-dots in the distance,
Then so near I can hear their thrumming wingbeats.

A curlew hiding in plain sight
Feather and mud blending,
Hearing its bubbling cadence
I know I am heart-home.

The natural world
Just for a moment
Makes my heart sing.
My anxiety finds refuge
Here in this place.
I am part of nature. It is part of me.

An wooden ketch, 8 sails, a gazillion lines and sheets (only one rope, the bellrope) the waters around the Isle of Mull with peak Scottish weather - what’s not to like?

Especially when these guys are in charge @providentsailing, with their skill, indomitable spirits and good humour. A special mention to @crudelia.mx who cooked up a storm twice a day in a tiny galley kitchen - sometimes literally in a storm. From boozy scottish lamb to a fantastic Mexican feast her food was an absolute treat.

I’m honoured to be one of the photographers taking part in The 40% Project. This is MP for Norwich North, Alice Macdonald, photographed by me earlier this year for the project.

More than 130 women photographers from across the UK have come together to photograph all 265 women MPs elected after the 2024 General Election, creating a unique visual record of the first Parliament in British history where women make up more than 40% of MPs.

This isn’t about politics—it’s about photography preserving a historic moment for future generations. If the Kickstarter is successful, these portraits will be published as a book and become part of the national published record, with a copy deposited in the British Library. We have just a week to go before it ends!

I’d love for you to be part of making that happen.

If you believe this story deserves to be preserved, please consider supporting our Kickstarter or sharing it with your friends and networks. Every pledge and every share brings us one step closer to turning this extraordinary collaboration into a lasting legacy.

Well, that’s a wrap. Norfolk saltmarsh: a fragile world has left the building.

A few prints, books, and cards sold, but more importantly, lots and lots of great conversations around how amazing and diverse the ecosystem of the saltmarsh is; how much it gives to us; and the existential threat to it and to us of rising sea levels and more extreme weather caused by climate change.

Most importantly how it is possible to hold hope, rebuild our communities and create grassroots positive action, even in the face of what sometimes seems like insurmountable odds.

A huge thanks to everyone at @wells_maltings who helped make the Saltmarsh exhibition run such a success , including Laura, Simon, Isaac, Sam, Tracey, Mike, Lottie, Paul, (and anyone who my failing memory has left out, apologies).

If you missed the exhibition head over to the website and check out the Saltmarsh Series, link in bio.

In Norfolk for RHS Sandringham so grabbed the chance to see @anniegaphoto photo exhibition in Wells.

I’ve long admired her work - she’s not award-winning for nothing - but her documenting of the salt marsh in Wells is something else. Some images show its stark beauty, others are almost painterly in their approach.

Annie is one of the people who encouraged me to take my photography seriously. I owe her a lot. Just wish my photos were half as good.

The exhibition closes tomorrow (July 19) but you can see many of the photos on her website.
