We’re recapping a day that we will hold close to our hearts for years to come! 🩵

After two months of dreaming, planning, building, and watching this space transform, we officially opened the doors to the An-Nisa Community Center, a place created for our community to connect, learn, grow, and belong.

None of this would have been possible without our beautiful community of supporters who believed in this vision and made the buildout of this center possible. To every donor, volunteer, contractor, partner, staff member, and friend who gave their time, resources, duas, and support: this space exists because of you.

We were deeply honored to welcome Shaykh Omar Suleiman as our special guest and to celebrate this new chapter surrounded by so many of the people who have walked alongside An-Nisa throughout the years.

And the day brought another beginning, Khanvo Coffee officially opened its doors inside the An-Nisa Community Center, creating another little space for conversation, connection, and community.

Our hearts are full. Our doors are open. And, inshaAllah, this is only the beginning.

Have you ever wondered what you would really do if you were experiencing domestic violence?

It is easy to stand outside someone’s situation and think, “Why doesn’t she just leave?” But what if leaving meant losing your home, financial security, children, family support or possibly placing yourself in even greater danger?

We are so excited to invite members of our community to try something different with us. Thecia Jenkins (@theciajenkins), Training Director at Harris County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council (@hcdvcchou), will lead us through In Her Shoes, a powerful interactive experience where you will step into realistic domestic violence scenarios, make the difficult choices survivors are often forced to make, and see how quickly every decision can lead to another barrier.

🗓️ Wednesday, October 21
🕙 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
📍 An-Nisa HQ (7100 Regency Sq Blvd, Ste 272, Houston, 77036)

Over the past few weeks, we completed the first two sessions of our Career and Financial Empowerment Workshop series, helping our clients recognize their strengths and move forward with greater confidence 💼

During the first session, participants explored their career goals, identified transferable skills, and learned that caregiving, volunteering, education, community involvement, and life experiences are all valuable parts of their career story. They also began creating or strengthening their résumés and learned how to tailor them for different opportunities.

The second session took the next step. Participants learned how to understand job postings, complete applications, prepare for interviews, build professional connections, and use LinkedIn more effectively.

What made these workshops especially meaningful was the amount of personal support available. Because so many wonderful volunteers came out, participants were able to receive one-on-one guidance. They could work through their résumés, ask specific questions, and receive advice that was relevant to the careers they hope to pursue.

A very special thank you to Zoha Gulamali, who created and led these workshops with so much thought and care, and to her amazing volunteer team: Shahnawaz Mahmood, Rafay Alam, Shehzeen Cochinwala, Sana Usman, Aeliya Arif, Arsula Parekh, Saad Memon, Mashaael Qutiefan, and Amany Yousef. Thank you for sharing your time, professional experience, and encouragement so generously with our clients 🩵

We always ask, “Why didn’t she leave?” but have we considered what seeking justice actually costs a domestic violence survivor?

We can count legal fees, but it is harder to count the lost income, interrupted education, strained relationships, and years spent responding to the abusive partner she was trying to leave.

And, paying those costs does not guarantee that the domestic abuse will be understood or that the court outcome will provide safety.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we need an honest conversation about both the misuse of legal proceedings by abusive partners (litigation/legal abuse) and the responsibility of the institutions in the legal system making life-changing decisions.

Access to a courtroom and the justice system matters. So do what happens inside it and the ability to challenge what goes wrong.

We have to ask: what needs to change so that seeking justice does not become another source of harm for domestic violence survivors?

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month 💜

Abuse rarely starts with a bruise, it begins with control. A partner cuts you off from friends, dictates your money, tracks your every move, or uses fear disguised as love.

This month, we’re exploring the reality of leaving a DV situation; it’s not as easy as everyone thinks. Legal, financial, emotional, physical hurdles all serve as obstacles between a survivor and freedom. Let’s explore practical solutions to ensure that a survivor does not feel alone and can count on the system and the community around them to help them.

Our very first event at the An-Nisa Community Center was a day to honor our seniors and it was an overwhelming success! 🥹

The community center opened its doors to the elders who shaped the people we are today. They are the backbone of our community, and their wisdom carries us through life’s trickiest seasons. We came together to celebrate them, to listen to them, and to say ‘thank you’. Because before we look ahead, we honor those who paved the way.

Thank you to every senior, family member, and volunteer who joined us. This is just the beginning of a space where every single member of our community finds companionship, connection, and care 🩵

A weekend of learning, laughter, connection, and meaningful conversations! 🧡

An-Nisa had the pleasure of joining the Islamic Center of Brushy Creek for a weekend Family Series, where our very own Bibi Khan led two engaging sessions on Healthy Communication & Knowing Yourself.

Together, we explored how self-awareness and intentional communication can strengthen our marriages, families, and everyday relationships.

A huge thank you to @icbcmasjid for the warm welcome and to everyone who showed up, participated, asked questions, and made the weekend so special. We loved connecting with you! 🤍 taken in Islamic Center of Brushy Creek (ICBC) by @annisahopecenter
