Domestic violence is not always visible, and it is not limited to physical harm. Abuse can take many forms, including emotional, sexual, psychological, financial and digital abuse, as well as stalking and coercive control.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we are sharing updated information to help our community recognize abuse and know where to turn for support.

If you or someone you know needs help, call The Bridge’s confidential 24/7 hotline at 713-473-2801 or reach out to one of the organizations listed in this graphic.

Domestic violence does not always begin with a bruise or a slap. Sometimes it begins with words meant to humiliate, control, frighten, or devalue another person.

Whether the abuse is verbal, emotional, psychological, financial, spiritual, or physical; abuse is abuse.

The person causing the harm must take accountability, and not after years of damage, not after the family is broken, but the first time abuse enters the relationship. Seek help.

It is important to learn where the anger, control, resentment, or rage is comingfrom. Taking responsibility is not weakness. It is the beginning of helping yourself and those around you.

I cannot begin to describe what domestic violence can do to a child.

Some children become quiet, some aggressive, some anxious and many learn to pretend everything is fine.

When children of domestic violence suffer and their wounds are never addressed, the pain can follow them into adulthood, and into the next generation. The cycle has to stop somewhere.

Many people who become abusive grew up around abuse or experienced trauma themselves. That may help us understand where harmful behavior began, but it never excuses the choice to hurt someone else.

Domestic violence is not simply a “family problem” that should be hidden behind closed doors. It is a cycle of pain that requires intervention, accountability, healing, and support.

The victims need help.
The children needs help.
And yes, the person causing the harm also needs help.

Healing will only begin when we stop hiding the abuse, stop minimizing it, and have the courage to say:
This cannot continue into another generation.

Community is at the heart of everything we do. 🧡

This summer, our Executive Director, Sundal Ali, spent time in Texas connecting with SOAR member organizations across the state — Mosaic Family Services, An-Nisa, AFSSA, Daya, Peace in the Home, and Chetna.

These visits were an opportunity to strengthen relationships, learn from the incredible work happening on the ground, and continue building collective power across our network.

We’re grateful to our Texas member organizations for welcoming us and for the work they do every day to support survivors and strengthen our communities. Stay tuned to see where we go next!

Still thinking about what a great morning we had at Forward: Big Lessons from the Small & Mighty 💛

We gathered to celebrate the Early Childhood Resiliency Fund and, especially, the 14 agencies that spent the past several years doing the work - trying new approaches, solving problems, sharing what they learned, and finding better ways to support young children and families impacted by domestic violence.

We’re so grateful to Judge Lina Hidalgo, Harris County Commissioners Court, and the Harris County Department of Economic Equity & Opportunity’s Early Childhood Initiatives Division for making this work possible and continuing to show up for children and families across Harris County.

And to our 14 ECRF partner agencies: thank you for your creativity, honesty, and willingness to learn alongside one another. We learned so much from you, and we’re excited to share those lessons more broadly.

A special thank you to Katharine Shilcutt for helping us tell the story of this work and capture the voices, lessons, and experiences of the people who made it happen.

This year also marks 30 years of HCDVCC. It felt fitting to celebrate that milestone surrounded by longtime partners, new friends, and so many people committed to making our community safer for families. Thank you to Senator Molly Cook for marking the occasion with a proclamation.

More to come! Stay connected for the full ECRF Report this fall. 💛

The Houston community SHOWED UP to our first Summer of Service Initiative: Packing with a Purpose with Ansar Al-Hujjah!

35 volunteers of all ages came together on a Saturday afternoon and packed 200 essential care kits headed straight to a local women’s shelter in collaboration with An-Nisa. Our community raised $1,500+ in donations and supplies to make it all happen. Our biggest turnout yet and we could not be more proud 🌍

What made this day so special was not just the kits we packed but the community we built while doing it. Strangers became a team, kids and adults packed side by side and a group discussion circle reminded us all why we joined.

Thank you to every volunteer, donor and supporter because none of this would have happened without you.

Next stop August 1st 👀 🩸
