Chilly mornings. Sunny afternoons.
Just a few of the plants, native and otherwise, lighting up the late winter garden.
Mya supervising the gradual cut back. I like to do this slowly to allow all of the inhabitants to move around and adjust.
Advice on cutting back and dividing Stipa Ichu would be greatly appreciated in the comments 🙏

The ratio of garden to dog pics has slid firmly towards the latter with the arrival of Star, the very lovely greyhound, but here’s a mix of sweet moments and projects from this past couple of weeks.

I hope that you will join us on November 28th or 29th for our Open Garden. @barambahrareplants and Merricks Native nursery will both be selling plants. There will be a coffee van and @fosteryourgarden will be signing copies of ‘The Rookie Gardener’ on Saturday. Sandra @human_nature_scapes will have her book ‘Restore’ for sale on both days.

I’m also thrilled that @timothymitchell_landscape will be here to chat about the design process for our repurposed tennis court garden.

A little before an after. The top paddock garden took a long time to get to and I had hoped to extend it further by now but reflecting on what it was in June 2021 and where we are today, I might just cut us some slack 🌿

Our main consideration was not to upset the existing banksias, so we solarised the area and employed a no dig method. Levels were created with stacked logs and rocks that we could move by hand. Stairs and paths are gravel for permeability. The initial planting was a mix of hardy exotics and succulents, divided from the existing garden, and native tubestock.

As the natives grow, the exotics that protected them for the first two Summers are gradually being removed and replanted in other new areas of the garden. The ratio of natives to exotics will end up being around 80 /20.

After much research, we chose to use gravel mulch and it has been incredible for preserving moisture over Summer and keeping the soil warmer over winter.

It’s looking wild, as winter gardens should, and I’ll get around to more editing and tending over the coming weeks.

The end of May and the garden gets quite moody. Mya is ever the faithful garden companion as long as there’s sunshine and the gloriously uninhibited Cotinus Grace, high on red cordial, keeps partying on as we slip into winter.
