🏮 BIG NEWS: The Teapots are coming to the Museum! 🏮

I am so excited to announce that my "Teapot Lantern: Brewing Light & Connections" workshop has found a home for the Victoria at Dusk festival!

In the dusk time of Friday, February 13, I’ll be taking over the Cafe Space at the Royal BC Museum. We’ll be transforming upcycled materials into glowing art and using Sumi-e ink to share motifs of our heritage with one another.
Once our lanterns are lit, we will walk together to the CloudWalk at the Conference Centre Pavilion! ☁️✨

🗓 WHEN: Friday, Feb 13
📍 WHERE: Royal BC Museum Cafe
🕒 TECHNICAL DEMOS: 5:10 PM & 6:40 PM (Registration required!)
👋 DROP-INS: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM (As space permits)

Workshop Brief: Teapot Lanterns – Brewing Light & Connection 🏮✨

A final sneak peek into these vessels for Victoria at Dusk.

This project explores how cultural rituals — like sharing tea — are reshaped and preserved in new environments.

We “brew” community light through two elements:

A. The “Depressing Cup” Technique
Transforming discarded waste into organic teapot-shaped frames.

B. Sumi-e Ink Motif Sharing
Using traditional ink to letter heritage motifs onto lantern skins — sharing our languages with neighbours.

Moving from structured box to free-hanging string, the work transforms waste into light.
Supported by Neighbourhood Small Grants, this project fosters connection and skill-sharing through the universal symbolism of tea.

I am honored to be one of the artists selected for Plasticity, a group show organized by @supplyvictoria, curated by @jodaisyy and hosted at @habitcoffee.

This exhibition brings together 10 artists to spark further conversations around the harm of single-use plastics, landfill diversion, and art practice modalities including circular economies.

About the work "Teapot Lantern: Vessel of Shared Comfort": This piece transforms the most disposable fragments of daily life—coffee cups and grocery mesh—into a vessel of ritual and memory. By using these materials to shape a teapot lantern, the work demonstrates the physical malleability (plasticity) of consumer waste.

Visit the Exhibit:

Location: Habit Coffee, Chinatown Victoria. 552 Pandora Ave.

Dates: On display until January 11.

Note: My teapot is tucked away in the back area. Due to current operational limitations, the internal light is not on, but it is beautifully illustrated by the sideways cafe light, casting intricate shadows on the wall corner.

I plan to attend the reception on January 9 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM and would love to see you there!

"Happy New Year’s Eve! 🥂 Welcoming 2026 with the 'flower bloom' version of my pony lantern. I’ve updated the mane and tail with fresh lavender and chamomile.
I spent the afternoon using the kitchen window as a natural lightbox. I ended up trimming and hiding those distracting fishing lines after the first few shots—my dad was right about how tedious hair-work can be! While the side-lighting during the day is beautiful, there’s a specific magic to how it looks at night that is hard to beat. ✨"

Gathering instructional photos and reflecting on 'Brave the Wind.' 🌬️ Just submitted my Teapot Lanterns: Brewing Light and Connection workshop proposal to @lunarfest! 🫖✨

In this proposal, I’ve adapted the fearless spirit of the horse by using ribbons as the ‘mands’ (manes) for the handles. Wish me luck! 🤞

The Rebirth of the Pony 🌿🏮
There is beauty in the "abandoned." I am currently merging two forgotten garden bed borders and a weathered basket with a milk-container horse head that I’ve been experimenting with over the last few days.
This is the evolution of my previous snake lantern—originally crafted from fused bubble wrap, fabric, and calligraphy on rice paper—now being reborn as a Pony Joy Rider. It is a celebration of eco-art and the endless cycle of creativity.
The head is deforming a bit as I build out the frame, and he is a "stout" little horse for now, but I’m working through the structural shifts! I hope he’ll be ready to ride into the New Year soon.
