Experimental Materials: The "Communal" Teapot Lantern 🎋 (work in progress)
The "Skin" Secret: Adapting to Modern Bamboo 🎋✨
If you’ve worked with flat flexible bamboo strips (竹篾) as long as I have—from my childhood in Hong Kong buying strips at the neighborhood stationary store, to the Y2K Public Dreams Society days—you know the secret is in the dermis (the skin).
Old Stock vs. New Stock: A Structural Shift
My recent experiments have highlighted a major challenge for modern lantern builders:
🍂 The "Vintage" Chinatown Stock (Winter 2024): I sourced the very last stack from a Chinatown garden shop. It’s likely over 10 years old. Age has made it "bone-dry"—it has structural strength but snaps if bent more than 15 degrees. It’s lost its elasticity.
🌿 The New "Temu" Stock: These modern strips come with the skin removed.
The Good: Incredibly flexible. I can pull them into 10-inch circles without a single crack.
The Bad: They lack "core strength." Without that tough outer skin to provide tension, they are delicate and can’t hold a heavy structural load alone.
My Structural Workarounds
To fix the "floppiness" of skinless modern strips, I am adapting my engineering:
Doubling Up: Taping two strips together to mimic the tension and "spring" of natural skin.
The Jig Method: Using a blank DVD cylinder as a temporary spine to force the strips into specification until the form is locked.
Mechanical Joins: Using string-ties (with tape as a temporary hold) instead of hot glue. Traditionally, lanterns were tied with rice paper strips, not glue (as in 紮作)!
Documentation & Geometry
I am documenting every cut length and tie-point to help others understand the physics of the lantern. By using salvaged bamboo chopsticks to join the loops and cross-points, I’m adding the extra strength needed to attach the spout and handle later. 🫖

A side note: It would be lovely to join Taiwanese Canadian Cultural society's bamboo weaving if the opportunity was not cancelled :(

The turtle lantern stands like a comic traveler — doing his slow rounds along the front of False Creek, between BC Place and Science World.
As night falls, he grows with the city lights — the stadium glows a red Canada circle.
Earlier in the day, we passed the harbor ferry… but he chose to walk instead. 🌊🐢✨

Eco-Illuminessence Performance (Unedited Live Archive)

Thank you to everyone who joined in-person and the live stream! This is the unedited archive of live stream of my improvised performance at Jun 15 1:30 PM PDT during Eco-Illuminessence: A Sensory Crossing at @xchangesgallery.
This piece was a layered, stitched-together improvisation of multiple stories—featuring light and shadow play with glass cups, vases, upcycled lanterns, and live ink painting on rice paper. The brushwork merged directly with the shadows of umbrellas and a rabbit sculpture, creating hanging screens where shadows of my hands, vases, and the sounds of spoons intertwined.
Throughout the performance, I shared improvised stories:
🐉 Paddling shadows and lesser-known forms of dragon boat racing—on land, on ice with hockey sticks, playful contests of sinking or spinning the fastest.
🌀 A weaving of personal memories with Chinese legends—including the ancient story of a fish transforming into a bird and flying toward the North Pole, symbolizing resilience, transformation, and unexpected journeys.
☂️ Images shifted: birds traced the edges of umbrellas, bamboo leaf shadows unfolded into butterflies, and the ordinary turned into moments of surprise.
