WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER ABOUT TO TALK ABOUT DIVORCE INCOMING!!!!

As we are all well aware of: divorce happens. Those are the facts. It feels taboo to talk about as a wedding vendor. But that doesn’t take away from that fact that so many people go through it every year and though it’s more commonly “accepted” these days, there is still a stigma following it around. Fun-ish fact: I’m also a divorced person. Have been for a long time now. But I don’t talk about it often because there’s still some sort of weird shame that was taught to me when I was younger. I’m not ever going to say that divorce is easy, but sometimes it is the best thing. Sometimes it is the right thing.

Enter my beautiful friend, Annie, a poet/lawyer/past bride of mine who recently-ish went through a divorce. As a way to process, she wrote poetry all over her wedding dress. (Crying at how beautiful that is!!!!!!)
She then reached out to see if I’d ever consider photographing her in it as a celebration of putting her past behind her and entering into her new era. She said something like “I’m so sorry if this is weird!! Totally understandable if you don’t want to do this!!” and I said something like “I gotchu. Let’s do it.”
So we met where she once did bridals and couples photos. She wrote a few more poems and drank champagne and wore the red bottoms her current partner bought for her. Then she put on the dress—ink and memories and pain and love and all.
And we made some damn art.

After this session, Annie sent her dress off to the Museum of Broken Relationships, which is an actual place that showcases that—despite how singular heartbreak and grief can feel at times—you are never alone. And you never have been.

And then I wrote all of this into an actual poem too.
