Chapter 37✨

This morning while on the porch drinking coffee, I listened to Mel Robbins interview Gary Vee. His words brought tears to my eyes talking about what a privilege it is to be a human… specifically yourself. He talked about if you don’t like something about your life, change the room. Don’t wish away your life, elevate your life. It reminded me of Dolly Parton, and how she lived her life. She lived it joyfully and always finding ways to give. Dolly lived her life so grateful for the gifts she was given, and she took those gifts to help others.

I reflected on being in my late 30’s, and the beauty of the life I’m living. There is joy everywhere I look, and today has shown me 100 fold how true that is… siblings who take the time to send beautiful birthday texts, parents who drive up to see me for brunch, sisters who host birthday brunch and take their mornings to spend time with me, and a fiancee who has spent the weekend doing all my favorite things… the times of our lives. Counting the blessings I get to be part of every day. 🤍🤍🤍

Two big celebrations in one weekend for some our beautiful bride-to-be, and dad’s 65th birthday. A weekend filled with butterflies, cupcakes, life long friends, kids playing together, tacos and chocolate cake.
33 days until Mattie and Connor say “I do”, and we’re all so excited to celebrate your marriage! And we started our “month of joy” celebrations early with the most fun surprise party for our dad, the man who loves his people so big, and shows up for anyone who needs it. It was a day full of love to end this beautiful month🤍🤍🤍

“I give thanks to my God at every remembrance of you” Phil 1:3

Yesterday was our baby sister’s 25th birthday… her golden birthday. It’s a day that has held so much meaning to our family no matter how much time passes. While we know celebrations here on earth won’t ever compare to heaven, we spent the day together (missing our brothers of course) in what felt like true heaven on earth. We ended the evening with an early celebration of 40 years of marriage for our amazing parents.

When we were growing up, our summers usually consisted of basketball tournaments, and downtime was enjoyed at our grandparents’ house in their pool. We ate food off the grill with a baseball game being played on the porch. They are memories we carry joyfully. Yesterday, I saw the same thing, but with my parents now in the role of grandparents. Our day was spent in their pool with our favorite songs playing, babies laughing and keeping us on our toes all the way to a dinner celebrating the joy my parents’ marriage has brought us. They have given us all the best life. They are the epitome of “love never fails”. While there were rough parts, they continue to champion each other, and therefore champion each of their children. Their marriage is one of the greatest gifts I have been privileged to witness in my lifetime. Mom and dad, we all love and adore you. Thank you for always being in our corner, and showing us all such unconditional love. Some of our favorite titles are being “Denis and Susie’s kids”, and that will never change. Cheers to 40 years (next month), and we all love you toooooooo much🤍🤍🤍

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER ABOUT TO TALK ABOUT DIVORCE INCOMING!!!!

As we are all well aware of: divorce happens. Those are the facts. It feels taboo to talk about as a wedding vendor. But that doesn’t take away from that fact that so many people go through it every year and though it’s more commonly “accepted” these days, there is still a stigma following it around. Fun-ish fact: I’m also a divorced person. Have been for a long time now. But I don’t talk about it often because there’s still some sort of weird shame that was taught to me when I was younger. I’m not ever going to say that divorce is easy, but sometimes it is the best thing. Sometimes it is the right thing.

Enter my beautiful friend, Annie, a poet/lawyer/past bride of mine who recently-ish went through a divorce. As a way to process, she wrote poetry all over her wedding dress. (Crying at how beautiful that is!!!!!!)
She then reached out to see if I’d ever consider photographing her in it as a celebration of putting her past behind her and entering into her new era. She said something like “I’m so sorry if this is weird!! Totally understandable if you don’t want to do this!!” and I said something like “I gotchu. Let’s do it.”
So we met where she once did bridals and couples photos. She wrote a few more poems and drank champagne and wore the red bottoms her current partner bought for her. Then she put on the dress—ink and memories and pain and love and all.
And we made some damn art.

After this session, Annie sent her dress off to the Museum of Broken Relationships, which is an actual place that showcases that—despite how singular heartbreak and grief can feel at times—you are never alone. And you never have been.

And then I wrote all of this into an actual poem too.
