Control Issues is an experimental podcast series exploring borders as systems of inference, where control operates through data, prediction, and invisible thresholds. This first episode unfolds as a conversation, not to explain how systems work, but to think from inside them. What if the border is not where we are looking?

Control Issues is part of I STAND HERE AGAINST YOU — The Invisible Materiality of Borders, a research project by Laura Villa Baroncelli, supported by Strategia Fotografia 2024 and promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture.

Notes from the Salton Sea, 2017- ongoing

An expanse of water that wasn’t meant to exist—in an arid, unwelcoming stretch of the Sonoran Desert. Created by a technical mishap in the early 1900s, it became an exclusive getaway in the ’50s and ’60s, only to turn into an environmental disaster by the century’s close. For decades, cleanup efforts stalled in bureaucratic red tape and funding shortfalls, as toxic dust filled the air and ghost towns began drawing new outcasts. Then came the discovery of lithium.
