The reason why I'm in Mauritius! 😍🌴🌞😎

I received a research grant from the Paul Mellon Centre in Spring 2026. My funded project is titled "Did the colonial photography of arrival create an art of indenture in British occupied Mauritius, 1865 to 1920?"

Thank you @paulmelloncentr for believing in the project. taken in Mauritius by @another_hellosabsab

Meet the artists 📸 Sabrina Tirvengadum

@another_hellosabsab is a British Mauritian visual artist whose interdisciplinary practice spans collage, digital illustration, generative AI art, graphics and photography. Her work is driven by a desire to reconstruct the lost history of her Mauritian ancestors, a past deeply intertwined with the legacy of indentured labour in British-colonised Mauritius

Tirvengadum has few images of her family prior to the 1960s. To reconstruct her family album, she trained an AI model on the photographs that do exist from her personal archive and wider extended family network, prompting generative AI to visualise her family’s lost history. Some of these works feature in @autographabp's exhibition I Still Dream of Lost Vocabularies

Moments of togetherness are imagined: birthdays, studio portraits, family gatherings. These constructed images complicate the boundaries of truth, questioning what has been lost, hidden or never existed

See her works at Autograph's gallery in Shoreditch

Join us for the launch of Beauty Fall, a solo exhibition by deaf British Mauritian artist, Sabrina Tirvengadum @another_hellosabsab, opening at SPACE Gallery on tomorrow, 29 April 2026

Transforming the gallery into a satirical beauty salon, Beauty Fall explores how colonial histories and algorithmic beauty standards continue to shape identity, self-perception, and belonging. Through photography, sculpture, AI-generated imagery, and immersive installation, the exhibition invites visitors to question how beauty is measured and what it means to reclaim our reflection.

Join us on 29 April, 4-7:30pm.

Free and all welcome.

🎟️ RSVP for the launch via the link in bio.

Did you purchase the Financial Times today?

Two of my new pieces are in FT Weekend Magazine's Photo London issue, alongside Eugénie Shinkle, Edmund Clark and Anselm Ebulue.

I managed to juggle these new pieces alongside my solo exhibitions, and I've loved the conversations that followed.

Thank you @emma_bowkett for making it happen, and your lovely team for being patient with my submission. And to everyone who contributed to this journey, thank you 🤍 @ft_weekend

Image 1 description:
An open FT Weekend Magazine spread titled "MY LONDON" on a palm tree printed surface. The intro names four featured photographers: Sabrina Tirvengadum, Eugénie Shinkle, Edmund Clark and Anselm Ebulue. Two of Sabrina's artworks sit on the page. Left: a young Mauritian girl in a pink frilly dress standing in a garden with a child's pink bicycle, a doll on a picnic blanket and washing on the line. Right: a 1980s family living room with two children and two women on a brown striped sofa holding a newspaper, pink curtains, a CRT television and a blue elephant toy on a floral carpet.

Image 2:
The cover of FT Weekend Magazine dated 9 May 2026, with the title in pink serif type. The cover artwork shows two overlapping black and white photographs of textured rock surfaces, slightly tilted. Pink text in the bottom left corner reads "THE PHOTO LONDON ISSUE 2026." The magazine rests on a palm tree printed surface. taken in London, United Kingdom by @another_hellosabsab

Sabrina Tirvengadum works with photography, collage, archives, digital painting, and generative AI to foreground the politics of visibility, asking, ‘who is remembered, who is erased, and how communities reclaim their narratives.’ Her work challenges the assumption that digital technologies are neutral, instead revealing how they can be reshaped to honour marginalised histories.

On view in Kensington, London, by appointment until 30 July 2026.

We’re so excited to have 1834 Collective (@1834collective) joining us for the TIDES Festival!

Throughout the day, they will present a digital exhibition featuring the collective’s interdisciplinary work exploring the global histories and contemporary echoes of Indian indentureship, alongside the enduring legacies of colonial and imperial power.

1834 Collective explores how these histories continue to shape identity, belonging and lived experiences across generations, communities and migrant contexts. Their work creates space for overlooked narratives to be seen, felt and carried forward.

Working across painting, photography, performance, storytelling and research, the collective’s practice is personal, intuitive and deeply rooted in ancestral memory. Rather than approaching these histories solely through academic frameworks, 1834 follows the stories, experiences and connections that emerge through curiosity, creativity and lived experience.

They will also be leading an artist talk from 1pm in the Queen’s Privy Chamber at the Queen’s House, offering an opportunity to hear more about their practice, the stories behind their work, and the histories that inform it.

We’re getting closer and closer to 3 October, and we’d love to see as many of you there as possible!

Follow the link in our bio to explore the full TIDES Festival programme and find out more.
