Silent Warning This AI painting shows a group of people in suits standing in water up to their knees. My latest work is the sixth billboard commission for SPACE ilford. It highlights the historical connections between the London Borough of Redbridge and the East India Company (EIC), which was a major player in global trade. My tableau, 'Afternoon Chai', is inspired by William Hogarth's 'Assembly at Wanstead House' (1728-1731). It reimagines the ballroom scene at Wanstead House, showcasing the Child family engaged in tea drinking and card playing. Sir Josiah Child, 1st Baronet, who was the Governor of the EIC, bought the Wanstead estate in the 1670s. Using his immense wealth, he transformed the landscape and developed stunning gardens. His son Richard later built the grand Palladian mansion, Wanstead House, on the estate, which was completed in 1722 but demolished in 1825, now the site of Wanstead Golf Course and Wanstead Park. The EIC also had many of its employees residing in Ilford, Wanstead, and Woodford. In my artwork, I've interwoven these stories into a dining scene where four South Asian women, including myself and friends who grew up in Redbridge, gather around a lavish table with a view of Wanstead House. The piece, a blend of AI image manipulation, archival images, and digital painting, surrounds us with symbols of our heritage: tea, spices, rugs, silk textiles, and porcelain, all items that the EIC imported, enriching the local area. This artwork invites viewers to explore new aspects of Redbridge's history, acknowledging the global influences on our local environment. We are so pleased to be showcasing an outstanding new body of work by Sabrina Tirvengdum and Mark Allred at our forthcoming group exhibition ‘Future Focus: New Terrain’ 16.10.23. @another_hellosabsab @markallred This new work expands on Sabrina’s personal exploration into diasporan identity and her Mauritian heritage through family archival photos, taking viewers on a transformative journey of self-discovery and introspection. Her ancestral research into the Indian indenture system led to the discovery of a surprising connection to a French aristocratic surname, prompting her to examine the implications of hidden family narratives carried through the generations. As with many patriarchal societies the burden of culture mostly affects women. This investigative process seeks to uncover the family’s complex past through imagery alone, reminding us of photography’s power to describe the unseen and unsaid. Through the process of reimagining the past using AI generators and digital painting, Sabrina takes ownership. Dramatic new worlds are born that fuse real and altered realities, rebuilding the fractured figures within the frame and, in turn, her own past, present and future. Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to visit the Van Gogh immersive experience in Brighton. It was like a larger version of the big advertising screens you see around Piccadilly, but all contained within one room. I understand the purpose behind it, but personally, I would have preferred to spend the money on watching a film at the cinema. One section of the floor was decorated with sunflowers, and there was supposed to be a perfumed area. However, because it was the school holidays, it didn't smell pleasant but I'm not sure how sunflowers are meant to smell. In the second image, I was pleasantly surprised to see that there were accessible additions, such as audio and BSL videos, to explain the text in the room about Van Gogh's life. To start the new year two of us at WAH have our work displayed at the Print House Gallery for the New Year Group Exhibition. It’s there until the end of February. If you’re in Dalston pop by to see our work and some of the other artists. The piece displayed is a homage to my great-grandmother. After 14 years I went back to see my family in Mauritius and whilst out there I learned that my great grandmother was a maid for the Marrier d'Unienville family. I also learned the french aristocratic surname is in my DNA. Mauritius has an indentured history that isn't spoken about and a lot of people from my generation would agree that our family doesn't like to talk about the past. My new pieces focus on recording and telling those untold stories to help define our identities. I collaborated with Mark Allred to use the family photo, AI image generator and digital painting.
