Self-Portrait in Bendy Balloons, 2007 (oil on canvas, 120 x 90cm) is now on view @domobaal together with other works from that period. Private view Saturday 26th noon to 6 pm.
A portrait head made out of balloons is ridiculous. And a self portrait constructed out of those bendy balloons that clowns use is doubly so, they look like condoms for one thing. There is something sinister about this head, no matter how many times you puncture and deflate it you know it will leeringly inflate again, rather like the murderous psychopath you are convinced you have finally drowned in the bath but who rises up again the moment your back is turned. taken in Domobaal by @anselkrut

Testicles with Moustache 2006, (oil on canvas, 122 x 97 cm) and other paintings from that period will be on view at @domobaal Gallery. Private view 26 September 6pm

This is just very wrong. A rear view of buttocks and legs and pendulous testicles make a face at you. The testicles are a fake nose coloured red. The moustache is fake too. Makes you wonder who painted the pinwheel eyes on the buttocks and what their intentions were. The heavier outline of the thighs is offset by the more delicate tracery of the calves and feet that double as a mouth. The hat is set at a jaunty angle. taken in Domobaal by @anselkrut

Whistling Winnie 2002 (oil on canvas, 61 x 46 cm) and other works from that period will be on view @domobaal Gallery. Private view Saturday 26 September 12 - 6pm.

Making faces in the mirror, performing for oneself, adopting a personality. Posing. The elbows are the wrong way round. The opening and closing of the louvred slats in the background is a nicely judged wink. taken in Domobaal by @anselkrut

Marionettes go Bowling 2026, oil on canvas 90x60 cm
Having freed themselves from their strings (some evidence of having been strung remains in drawn lines) these marionettes are behaving exuberantly in a bowling alley. And why not, being liberated? They are relishing their the autonomy, swinging the balls around dangerously, clearly not in complete control and there seems to be some confusion about which limb to use.
The paintwork is very scruffy in places with some over-enthusiastic sanding back in the process of trying to find the image. It gives the marionettes a battered look, as if their puppet life has been one of misuse and neglect. You can see other faces partially painted over, the marionettes that never made the cut.
The bowling balls look as if they are exiting the painting with force but the marionettes themselves are fully contained within it; apart from their noses which ping first against the format’s edge as if in a pinball machine before exiting the top of the painting. A worrying thought occurs: maybe the marionettes are not as free as they think but have been suspended by their noses all along? What then to make of their behaviour?

Clown on a Car 2026, oil on canvas, 70x50 cm

That red spiral could be a party blower. More likely it’s the puff of his breath, maybe as he blows a raspberry. Conversely, it could be an insouciant whistle to distract from his being an agent of chaos. It pushes him back a little into a slight lean. The conical shapes of his sleeves (of which his nose is a miniature) look as if they are pumped out of his shoulders in a never ending sequence, constantly renewed.

Both his face and his body are divided into two, and the car is also, it has two drivers grinning happily and heading off in opposite directions. There’s a blue force field around the car — the clown has charged it up. Malevich’s late painting of Sportsmen from 1931 is a distant echo.

Listening to Garden Sounds 2026, oil on canvas 180 x 140 cm

There is something of attentiveness in the expression and in the pose. This is less the attentiveness of looking, and more of listening: to the bird singing, to the flowers growing, to the snail gliding. Maybe attentiveness to her body: an aching knee, pointing toes. There is a profile lurking in her torso, her breast its eye, her arm its mouth, the ache marks from her knee perhaps the outsize fingers of that other body.

I wanted the quality of sound to be present in the colours and in the rhythms. Where the colours in the top left hand corner abut they do so for me with the sound of the bird’s chirp, which then runs along the edge of the yellow shape to her ear. The 3 flowers are a flat note that speaks to the 3 ache lines of the knee that speak to the toes. The orange arc, (her arm? the back of the chair?) begins a long sweep that disappears behind her to be continued in the yellow leg. The profile in her torso is echoed at the edge of the blue shape. The chair legs, another group of 3, propose stability but don’t enact it, they are more engaged with the idea of balance and rhythm than with bothering to provide support. by @anselkrut

Stick Figures with Speech Bubbles 2026 oil on canvas 100 x 90 cm

They have worn themselves to sticks straining to speak. The flailing limbs with club hands are stiffened with the effort to communicate. The faces are gurning with pleading. They are both crucified and figures at the base of a crucifixion. The green strip (flatter in reality than in the photo) is intransigent and aloof. The background is scratched out as if with static. The speech bubbles are blank. The faces are mask like — fleshless and hollow eyed. That erections and arms are indistinguishable and equally flailing adds a note of sour burlesque.

Nose Pendulum 2026, oil on canvas, 60 x 40 cm
Of the facial features the nose gets the rawest deal by way of poetic metaphors. Eyes like stars, mouth like a rosebud, shell like ears, nose like… “a promontory” (Cyrano).  On the other hand it offers terrific scope for imaginative projection; it is literally a Swiss Army knife of functional possibilities. In this painting it takes on extra duties as a pendulum. Of course it’s a tiny bit lewd, but its sense of purpose is so evident that you forget to notice that the head is green. The colour of each nose  suggests an order of procedure, something like traffic lights: a stop, a go, a pause, a before and an after. The strong outline makes the image almost like a hieroglyph, and although its meaning is not explicit something fateful is clearly being measured out in time. The nose knows what it’s about; it has, after all, its own dark history as a signifier of race and culture to draw upon.

Man with Yo-yo 2026, oil on canvas, 70 x 60 cm

The overlong blue arm is from thinking about the overlong blue arm in Cezanne’s Card Players. Overlong arm requires overlong legs. The blue shape that might be a neck brace is a nod to the bunched up collars in the Cezanne too. The cards have been replaced with a yo-yo. Just the one yo-yo shown at different moments; a time lapse composite. He has the attitude of a card sharp. Slicked back hair and neat side parting. Cuban heels. A green nose suggesting duplicity. The lower leg(s) might be only a single leg shuffling. The shadows have detached themselves. The spinning yo-yo mimics a gunslinger’s revolver twirl.
