there’s an inevitable joy in painting this good - along with its in-your-face quirk and biting humanity -
Not to be missed, a selection of paintings by Ansel Krut first shown @_domobaal_ almost exactly twenty years ago, in dialogue with a few more recent paintings, animations and monotypes. A privilege to get to see this body of work brought together again. Up through 7th November.🔥🔥🔥🙌🏻✨

I assumed to seek knowledge, to know more, will push the practice into new territory, but to allow faith to coexist with knowing is where the practice really grows. The tension lies in the struggle of restraint. To question and challenge my understanding of what the practice is over the past few months has been wild.

Coming from movement and physicality, I pushed gesture to expand space. But with every gesture I felt there was another depth missing. A dimension I wasn’t able to see yet, movement didn’t feel enough. That became the moment of crisis.

I keep thinking about:

الروح من أمر ربي وما أوتيتم من العلم إلا قليلاً

How knowing is an actionable skill, while faith is the ability to sit with the unknown is much harder.

Physically, I have been doing so much sitting, looking. What happens in total stillness? How can stillness have its place?

To find that in a mark has become my new obsession. To bring depth to the outward was to go inward. So I sit, looking. Holding. In response, a new tension appears.

I’ve been thinking today about the work of Felicity Powell, ahead of an event I’m doing at Richard Saltoun Gallery on Thursday 3 September - a walk through then a chat with her husband Ansel Krut.
.
I’m still forming ideas ahead of the presentation, but thinking a lot about mythology and metamorphosis, glorified and abject bodies, the power of fragments and found objects, and about how so much of her work is dealing with something that hovers very close to magic - superstition, lucky charms, totems, spells and amulets. Her sculptures have an uncanny potency. I’m looking forward to talking and listening.
.
Please come and join us - details of the event are in my bio. It’s free but space is tight so you need to book.
