This week, I taught five yoga classes. I also took a yoga class with the fabulous @yogawithbrett - the final @flowercityyogaleague session of the summer. It was such a good week. Yoga clarifies my focus. It grounds me personally and connects me in community. I haven’t written much about teaching yoga in this space. But it has been an anchor in my life, an incredible process of svadhyaya — which is Sanskrit for self study. Svadhyaya is the fourth of five niyamas, or personal practices, that are foundational to yoga. I read the yoga sutras of Pantanjali, the yoga scriptures, each week. And I build sequences and themes based on these ancient ideas. It’s a reflective practice of preparation for me as a teacher, and hopefully illuminating for my students once class begins. I teach two classes each week at local YMCAs - the Eastside on Tuesdays, and the Schottland Y on Fridays. I also teach two classes at @karunayogahouse in Bushnell’s Basin. It’s a small yoga studio that launched in June. I teach three active classes weekly, which are power vinyasa flows, and one gentle class. The main idea I’ve been sharing this week is that yoga is fundamentally a spiritual practice. That means it’s about our inner life. You might be surprised by this given our emphasis on yoga as exercise in the west. But the oldest yoga teachings, and the most powerful teachers, understand and communicate this. As with any spiritual journey, there are obstacles. Sometimes, these challenges are internal. Other times, they are external. But yoga teaches us that these obstacles are not speed bumps on our highway to tranquility. These difficulties are, themselves, our day to day teachers. I’ll be talking more about the way yoga can support us in our lives off the yoga mat at Karuna on Thursday, September 17th at 7 pm. It’s 100% free. Please consider joining us for the conversation. Love all yall and namaste. by @anthonycsiracusa
Many thanks to the inimitable @sashabarr for hosting me in Seattle. And shout out to the homies @arehling1 and @mattchucole for making the trip around the Olympic peninsula. We hit some great spots. Ruby Beach, Beach 2, an 11 mile hike thru the Hoh Rainforest. We also ate some decent food in the peninsula town of Forks. Rinconocito Del Sabor, where Aaron felt the struggle. Sullys Burgers - milkshakes were had. Golden Gate Chinese (twice!), where the General Tsos chicken was better than the General Tsos tofu. Shout out to the owner and her family. They’ve been holding it down for 30 years! Also shout out to 11 year Blake helping out his mom at the local bistro. We learned a lot about the happenings in Forks from this young man. Conversations were rangy. From Nightmare on Elm St to the challenges of AI. From the band Geese (🪿) to 8 Ball and MJG. From Twin Peaks to the best Jason movies. From Neuromancer to the Bobiverse. Ground was covered, thoughts were shared. There were, of course, side splitting laughs. I mean, chuckles that left me sore the next day. Sunsets on the beach. Hours in the rainforest. Ferry beers. The search for the Fisher, the cat sized weasel. This trip had it all. Thanks to my buds for a first rate trip to the PNW. Love all yall. by @anthonycsiracusa
