2 weeks ago, had the pleasure of putting on an experimental pedagogy programme around rubber at @kunstenfestivaldesarts Free School. we opened with a dense and personal performance~lecture, journeying from ancient Olmec sacrificial bogs to revolutionary heroes roleplaying as tree milk to petroleum shapeshifting into polyisoprene to portals found on little rubber shapes in an Antwerp shopfront to the infinitely malleable heart of the matter (aka g!mp theory). this was followed by a precious conversation with @rosbiscotti and @john_k_cobra. between us 4, rubber manifests as an almost impossibly wide range of meanings, invocations, amulets, frictions and problems. 

then, we guided 2x of a newly conceived 2-parts workshop - a writing-and-making sesh to produce a new counterarchival object to be sealed in rubber folders + an opportunity to roleplay as a g!mp, or rather to g!mp in order to roleplay. finally reunited with my luggage yesterday and enjoyed so much looking back at the things people made, the uncanny interactions between memory and history, desires and abjections (not a binary). sharing some fave assemblages and g!mpresences here 📂🩻

we closed with a relay consisting of a performance (a live confessional for the probable sin of attempting autoethnography as a rubberwearing-rubbertapper) set in a facsimile of a post-tapping napping shelter but made out of rubber, followed by a dream nightmare double-bill: the film adaptation of Szekely-Lulofs’ Rubber (first dutch film shot on-location in the plantations of Medan) + Emergencies (made in supply chains & plantation-movie-sets from across time). at least in my mind, this combo has crazy affinities and edutainment value.

about a year ago, while on a long walk, @kuuhulluutta was telling me about her research on Cambodian deforestation when, as we were cutting through Archway, she gingerly brought up a passing thought: as far-fetched as it may sound, is there, somehow, vaguely, maybe, a relation between Cambodia’s rapid deforestation for the development of rubber plantations and the psychos3xual phenomena of rubber fet1shism? that stray piece of conversation led us down a rabbit hole into the obscene and traumatic realities of rubber plantations, especially with regards to its history and ongoing impacts in South East Asia. for the next 8 months, we went to work on a potential grant application that would help realise an art-research project tying together seemingly disparate themes of (commodity) fetishism, g1mphood, colonial legacy, industrial production and tropical maladies. we sent off the application to the Kone Foundation sometime in mid-sept, and on a friday morning early last month, we found out that our (honestly quite unhinged) project has been successful for their grant !!! 🥹 no words can sufficiently describe our gratitude towards Kone Foundation, who will be supporting us on this project until at least 2026. our desk research and prep phase will run until later in the year, and we are really keen to connect with anyone, especially South East Asian locals, who has even the most tangential interest, experience or knowledge in these topics. pls get in touch if that’s you or someone you know 🫶🏻 it’s been so so so long since I’ve been back in mainland SEA, looking forward to meeting everything again, this time with my bestest buddy 🖤 by @antibart

This Sunday at W139: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘴, a screening and reading programme with Komtouch Napattaloong (@thisisdewkn), Bart Seng Wen Long (@antibart), and Kaisa Saarinen (@kuuhulluutta)! Extending from the trio’s collective installation on view in 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨, the programme will bring focus to their distinct yet sympathetic forms of narration and storytelling. Featured will be three short films, an interview with a gimp, and excerpts from a hybrid nonfiction-in-progress. Lingering within the hallowed space of the make-shift rubber tapper shelter in the main exhibition gallery, between the CRT monitor and the modern flatscreen and the stacks of anarchronistic agitprop, are persistent ghosts biding their time to re-manifest: as kinky anecdotes of a middle-aged Singaporean rubberist; a veteran camcorder on its last pixels; eccentric mythologies that have built and continue to sustain a nation’s spirit; the dreams sustained by freebleeding trees night after night. 𝑬𝒙𝒉𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑭𝒐𝒄𝒖𝒔 | 𝑩𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝑺𝒆𝒏𝒈 𝑾𝒆𝒏 𝑳𝒐𝒏𝒈 The exhibition 𝑪𝒓𝒂𝒔𝒉, 𝑪𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒉 at Inside-Out Art Museum presents 𝑹𝒖𝒃𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝑫𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑰𝒕𝒔 𝑳𝒊𝒇𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆: 𝑭𝒊𝒆𝒍𝒅 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘𝒔 by Singaporean artist 𝑩𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝑺𝒆𝒏𝒈 𝑾𝒆𝒏 𝑳𝒐𝒏𝒈 @antibart, a work from the research-based art project 𝑹𝒖𝒃𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝑫𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑰𝒕𝒔 𝑳𝒊𝒇𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆, which he co-initiated with Kaisa Saarinen in 2023. Comprising four autofictional interviews, the work opens up a series of distinct sites through the accounts of rubber fetishists in Southeast Asia, positioning rubber within the duality of “commodity fetishism” and the “fetish commodity.” Rubber is at once a raw material whose value has been shaped by colonialism, global trade, and industrial production, bearing the violence and fantasies of the modern commodity system; and a surface that comes into intimate contact with the body, evoking sensory experience and desire, and continually reactivated through embodied experience. Through layers of narration and retelling, accidents and their aftermath become sensationalised, even transforming into objects of fascination. With its cult-like aesthetics and marginal perspective, the film interrogates how desire is shaped by history and institutional structures—and, in turn, how desire can unsettle established orders. by @antibart

Malaysian-Chinese starlet Stella Cheng sits in a Parisian hotel room for a behind-the-scenes interview about her double role in the film production Vampires All Around Me, inspired among other things by Olivier Assayas’ cult classic Irma Vep (1996) and its predecessor Les Vampires (Louis Feuillade, 1915). Drawing from her grandfather’s real memoirs, Stella offers an emotionally fraught account of how her family’s rubber business was caught in the crosshairs of history – first during the Japanese Occupation, and again during the Malayan Emergency. Rubber…you use it everyday (car tires, sneakers, erasers) but do you know the story behind it? Started in 2023, Rubber Dreams of Its Lifetime is a collaborative project by Bart Seng Wong and Kaisa Saarinen that explores historical and contemporary narratives around rubber as an essential material, volatile economy and potent erotic fantasy. Along the way it touches on the history of colonization and industrialization, fetish and sex economies, martial arts physiology, sympathetic magic and synthetic biology.
