Julia's five-day workshop reimagines the black box (theatre, cinema, camera, mind, eye/i) as a site of strange speculative agency, slow cognition, radical adaptation and analogous experimentation. Working with the fading autumn light, this process investigates the creative process as an act of conjuring + of cultivating the conditions for wonder.

The week will involve:

+ Focusing exercises that support seeing/hearing, noticing + imagining

+ Guiding slow-time attention towards close observation + capturing of detail

+ Creating visual maps of thinking + translating these into scores for performative choreographies

+ Developing black box texts through real-time dictation + transcription

+ Sometimes working through/in the dark, with eyes closed or covered, nurturing other muscles of perception + concentration

+ Explorations in disrupting + augmenting the body boundaries, extending potentials of physical form

+ Working with processes of folding, stitching, cutting, sticking, binding, unpicking + rearranging of materials, bodies + objects

Sheree Rose is a pioneering body artist and subcultural icon of the Los Angeles BDSM scene. She has been thrilling, shocking, and exciting audiences around the world, beginning with her collaborative photography and performances with Bob Flanagan in 1981.

Their groundbreaking show, “Visiting Hours” opened at the Santa Monica Museum of Art in 1994, and travelled to the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City. She collaborated with Mike Kelley on the video “One Hundred Reasons”, as well as music videos with Nine Inch Nails (Happiness in Slavery), Danzig (It’s Coming Down) and Godflesh (Crush My Soul). She co-produced the Sundance award winning documentary film, Sick.

Since 2011, she has collaborated with British performance artist, Martin O’Brien, in performances in England, New York and Los Angeles, including “Dust to Dust” at One Institute, “The Viewing” at DaDa Fest in Liverpool, England, and “The Assension” at Jason Vass Gallery, Los Angeles. In 2020, the book ‘Rated RX: Sheree Rose with and after Bob Flanagan’ was published, documenting 40 years of performance work.

Curtain Call with Pianka Pärna
Thursday 8 October, 7–9 pm

This evening practice sharing invites post-Soviet and queer communities to gather around the themes of CURTAIN CALL, a new performance by Pianka Pärna @piankamperformance_ . Through movement, reflection and conversation, participants will explore ideas of identity, belonging and transformation in a collective and supportive space.

The session will begin with an embodied practice led by Pianka. Through movement and guided exploration, participants will be invited to connect with the body as a site of memory, displacement and resilience. Following this, Pianka and emilyn claid will facilitate a reflective dialogue, creating space to share experiences, questions and perspectives emerging from the practice. Together, we will explore themes of post-Soviet identity, queer belonging, kinship and survival, considering how personal and collective histories continue to shape the bodies we inhabit.

This workshop is part of the series Under Construction: Reopening, curated by artist and PhD researcher Alisa Oleva.

Book now! Link in bio! Ron Athey & Michele Occelli lead an intensive 5 day process exploring automatistic modes of performing through hypnosis, trance movement, mortification of the flesh and pageantry.

11-15 November, Peckham (London)

This will be a deep-dive into the practices of automatic writing, somatics, hypnosis and procession that Ron Athey has used in performance making since 1995. We’ll explore the modular sacred theatre, talismanic signatures and the place of bodily fluids in contemporary performance, along with exercises and tasks drawn from Athey’s current research.

The workshop is co-facilitated by Athey’s long-term collaborator Michele Occelli, whose work explores hypnosis as creative practice and altered states as gateways into the mind-body connection.

There will be morning lectures, with guest artists to be announced.
