The Caribbean island of Hispaniola is home to Haiti and the Dominican Republic — and even though they are neighbors, tensions between the two linger, stemming from a conflict in 1844.

Still, as @adrianadiaz, with Dominican heritage, and @vladduthierscbs, with Haitian heritage, know well, the two sides have plenty in common. They visited @antillesofbrooklyn , named after the island group that contains both countries, to see how two friends are celebrating their cultures together. by @antillesofbrooklyn

We couldn’t have dreamt of a better cuisine for our closing night. Run by 2 longtime friends and fraternity brothers Dru Goicochea (who is Dominican) and Erick Nicoleau (who is Haitian), @antillesofbrooklyn will bring a flavorful menu combining traditional island flavors with modern twists on Sunday, October 11th from 7:30PM at MoCADA.

About Kréol Fest:
This festival is a celebration of Creole cultures through music, dance, visual arts, literature, fashion, and food during international Creole Heritage Month.
Born from a desire to educate and connect, it showcases the richness and diversity of Creole heritage on a global scale.
For its 3rd edition, the program will consist of an opening ceremony with a jam session, live performances, a market place, conferences, workshops and a closing dj set.
A free program, for all generations.

For most of us, the day doesn’t start until we’ve had our first cup of coffee. In honor of #NationalCoffeeDay, we wanted to highlight the many great cafes District 43 has to offer to put a delicious pep in their step.

🇩🇴🇭🇹 A Dominican and a Haitian opened a café together in Brooklyn. Their message? “1 Island, 1 Love.”

Longtime friends Dru Goicochea, whose family is Dominican, and Erick Nicoleau, whose family is Haitian, created Antilles Cafe in Flatbush to celebrate the cultures they grew up with.

From Haitian griot and pikliz to Dominican morir soñando, the café gives both traditions a place at the table.

And the connection goes beyond the menu. Coffee, dominoes and community events make it a place where people can spend time together, share stories and get to know each other.

You can be proud of being Haitian or Dominican and still celebrate your neighbor. These two friends are showing what that looks like in practice 🙌🏾

Would you visit?👇🏾 Show @antillesofbrooklyn some love ❤️
