NIME Conference at Tivoli in Utrecht, New Interfaces for Musical Expression, what a treat!
I was invited to play my ‘Fello‘ to the community of artists, engineers and musicians, and also to speak the keynote together with Kristina Andersen:
‘Unarchiving The Hands’, about Michel Waisvisz‘ gestural controller of the 1980s, presenting some of my research and foreshadowing my book release ‘The STEIM Touch’ via Goldsmiths Press in 2026.
So many new connections! And I saw cute new ideas for playing music with digital tools, and how the archives may come to live. See you next nime!

Pingipung label night at @nachtasyl_thaliatheater Hamburg, 6th Nov 2026!

Three live concerts and two DJs. Experimental dub songs meet hypnotic, percussive improvisation and live-processed cello.

I̲k̲o̲ C̲h̲é̲r̲i̲e̲ (📷 2) from London plays her current album “Soft Centre” as the final date of her German tour supporting The Notwist. Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab) describes Iko Chérie’s songs as “music of a divine nature,” Valentina Magaletti as “melodies of quiet hope.” She herself calls her style “radical tenderness.” In this solo concert, the multi-instrumentalist’s fragile songs are given plenty of room.

The Hamburg-Berlin trio L̲o̲v̲e̲-̲S̲o̲n̲g̲s̲ (📷 3) combines Krautrock, dub, new wave, jazz and cosmic music into a hypnotic sound of bass, drums and electronics, with plenty of space for improvisation. At the end of 2026, Love-Songs go on a UK tour with new material, and they warm up for it with us in this night.

Pingipung co-founder A̲n̲d̲i̲ O̲t̲t̲o̲ (📷 4) performs with his cello and sensor bow. Here, too, dub is the fabric that holds everything together. The gestures of his bow in the air transform the cello sound with echoes, jazz scales and reverb spaces.

s̲o̲F̲a̲ e̲l̲s̲e̲w̲h̲e̲r̲e̲ from Brussels leads into the dance night. He is an obsessed crate digger, best known for his “Elsewhere” compilations and for his eclectic, genre-dissolving sets. His enthusiasm for rarities from tropical, Balearic, cosmic, leftfield electronic and dub promises a euphoric night on the dance floor.

H̲e̲i̲k̲o̲ G̲o̲g̲o̲l̲i̲n̲ (📷 6), also one of the Pingipung labelheads, opens the evening with one of his mesmerising DJ sets.

Finally. Unboxing this. 📖
The STEIM Touch just came off the press. Out Sept 22 2026 with @goldsmithspress London, as part of the Sonics Series.
It’s a book about STEIM, the Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music in Amsterdam. For 50 years (1969–2020) that place was a beehive of people building their own instruments, chasing an improvised, hands-on way of making electronic music.
I built my first Fello prototype there, almost 20 years ago now. And I got hooked on the place itself, all the stories of artists and engineers who passed through, all of them obsessed with the same question: how do we 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺 sound technology instead of trying to control it? They called this idea Touch, as coined by Michel Waisvisz who was the beating heart of the studio. This book is my attempt to unpack what that term meant and why it also might matter now.
I’ll be bringing copies to my next concerts, and presenting the book at lectures and workshops over the next few months. Or grab it direct from Goldsmiths (link in bio), hardcover (£34) or e-book.
Huge thanks to all artists who shared their memories in our interviews, to Kristina Andersen who let me work extensively in the Michel Waisvisz archive, and especially to Atau Tanaka @atautana, who invited me into the Sonics Series he curates. What a treat! Nightly ‘transumanza’ moving 200 goats and sheep from Erchie to Agerola on the Amalfi coast, helping the local shepherd’s family, leaving at midnight so we can use the road instead of the mountain path. The bell sounds are beyond hypnotic after 5 hours, especially in the tunnels (slide 2). by @antioddo

Joasihno kommen nach Hamburg und bringen ihren elektronischen Zauberkasten mit: ein vollständig in einem Koffer verbautes, batteriebetriebenes Straßenmusik-Orchester aus Roboter-Instrumenten, analogen Synthesizern und Percussion. Hinter @joasihno stehen Cico Beck (The Notwist, Aloa Input, Spirit Fest) und Nico Sierig (Instrument, Fehler Kuti), die ihre Musik irgendwo zwischen psychedelischer Maschinenmusik, experimenteller Elektronik und sehr herzlicher Tüftelei gebaut haben, dabei aber nie verkopft klingen.

Joasihnos Musik ist inspiriert von experimentellen Pionieren wie Mort Garson, der melancholischen Kraut-Elektronika sowie den Kanons von Moondog und den Patterns von Steve Reich. Ihr viertes Album "Spots" ist im November 2025 auf @alien_transistor erschienen.

Pingipung präsentiert einen der seltenen Live-Auftritte des Projekts in Hamburg. Dazu: Musik davor und danach von Heiko Gogolin und Andrea Wienck, Risotto von Andi Otto auf Spendenbasis. Kommt zahlreich und mit Appetit, denn die Plätze sind begrenzt.

HUNDEHERZ (heart of a dog) by Michail Bulgakov, the premiere at Schauspielhaus Hamburg took place this weekend, we’ll play many more shows in 2026. What a ride this production has been… I play the Fello system and many other instruments, embodying the deceased rebel and street musician ‘klimbim’ who donates his brain to the dog.
