Artist Statement:

There’s no heART without the ART, and there’s no ART without the heART…

With that being said, this project all started with an oil painting, an homage to a place I’ve called home since ‘96. Thanx to those of you who shared my painting…because of you, the most common request I received throughout this project were for hoodies/apparel to be made.

I’m just an oil painter with very little fashion sense; HOWEVER, I am an artist and I know how to create dope shit…and whatever I create comes from the heart.

The intentions behind this project has always been to spread unity across the 818 and beyond with pride, and that is the mission I’m on…hoping to spread some positivity. Much love to those of you who’ve been supportive of this project. Home is where the heart is…

I present to you the “Heart of the 818”

Dm me if indterested in a hoodie.

(Work in progress)

My son is getting older, and moments like this won’t last…that’s why I wanted to paint this memory.

Diving back into oil painting, the first thing I wanted to paint was my “happy place”.

For years I’ve enjoyed taking my dogs and my son to Hansen Dam. a place where I find peace, a place where I like to think.

This place is also special because this is where we found “Lady” 🐾. She’s been part of my family for nearly three years now, and she’s been a loyal companion ever since. Love my bitch.

A Boy and his Dogs at Hansen Dam, oil on canvas
(Work in Progress)

Hello Mother Truckers,

After the debacle known as @heartofthe818 …I needed a mental/creative break from anything having to do with ART.

Of course, like any artist, I was getting withdrawals and needed to get back to what I’m known for (🎨); however, i wanted to find a subject that mattered.

So as of right now, I’m painting “my happy place”. I wanted to paint my son and two dogs at Hansen Dam. This is where I enjoy going to see them run around and play…also, this is where we found “Lady” and took her home.

I want to share this acrylic painting I made of Ryan Dunn…this was right after he passed, I remember @jackass posting my painting on the main page of their website.

Tonight I watched Jackass: Best & Last with my kid. I’ve never seen my son laugh so hard in a movie theatre. The nostalgia in this film takes me back to when i was a 15 year old with a camera (see last slide)…still laughing just as hard, I’m just a little older now.

Happy to say I got to see it from the beginning…Thank you Jackass for the memories.

Tonight I went to @midnighthour_sfv for their amazing mural unveiling, and I wanted to see my friend and hand what is rightfully hers.

Through art, I have been blessed to have made friends with people who inspire me.

I find inspiration all around me, whatever touches my heart. @baby.takis gave me the inspiration I needed when I saw her sending a message to whoever paid attention…I paid attention, and I was inspired.

I was very fortunate that the community shared what I posted and she found it. I felt that it was important for her to see how she inspired the community and I was only interpreting what I saw onto canvas.

Steph, if you’re reading this. Thank you for being you. You have an ability yourself as an artist, and it is necessary for you to continue to express yourself. Create what is REAL to you, and that is what makes ART so great…the possibilities are endless.

Our hearts are heavy.

What happened at Sepulveda Middle School is something no community should ever have to face. No child should feel the need to pick up a gun. No family should have to carry that fear.

At Heart of the 818, we stand for peace, unity, and protecting the future of our Valley — our kids.

This isn’t just a moment. It’s a call for awareness, for conversation, and for real change.
We have to come together as a community — parents, neighbors, leaders — to guide, protect, and uplift our youth.

Lay down hate. Lift up peace.

The 818 is more than an area code… it’s home. And we look out for our own.

(Drew Struzan’s iconic art on movie posters has always inspired me as a kid, if you look him up you can see why.)
