Arboreal Being (II), 2026
Pencil on paper,
11 x 18 inches

On view, as part of the group show Where the Body Begins at @whitewallthegallery

An imaginary meeting of bodily forms- of silent stone with breathing arboreal structures. Carved drapery forming visual parallels with the twists of the boughs, and the trunk doubling as a shared body.
Bark and boughs, as blood and bone.

Arboreal Being (I), 2026
Pencil on paper,
11 x 27 inches

On view, as part of the group show Where the Body Begins at @whitewallthegallery

Was looking at Boddhisatvas, meticulously carved in schist (the dark 'greyness' of the stone so translatable in pencil), their delicate drapery folds, sumptous jewellery, convincing anatomy, upright posture- and the writhing, dancing nature of tree trunks

Hariti, 2025, pencil on paper

Was fortunate to visit the beautiful statue of Hariti in the Lahore museum (last slide) many times last year, and felt I had to draw her - reimagined as a growing, grounded maternal figure in a tree form, a trunk here as a makeshift plinth.

The series ‘Cross Pollinations’ by Anushka Rustomji is a playful subversion and exaggeration of existing Natural History illustrations and Company paintings.

Natural History paintings were intended to be visually accurate depictions of flora and fauna in their natural state. However, the depiction of these beings was always selective, involving manipulations of scale and size, adjustments to amplify aesthetic designs and compositions, and at times, inaccurate contexts where plants and animals were placed together without any natural connection. In Anushka's practice, these inconsistencies are brought to the forefront, revealing how the artist’s (and often Western patron’s) preconceptions and aesthetic decisions take precedence over reality and inevitably shape natural history art.
