Last Days of Magic by Ian Rosales Casocot

Book Tour with Talk Bookish to Me, Anvil Publishing, and author Ian Rosales Casocot. Thank you for the copy! This collaboration will not in any way affect my review of the book.

This book was magic. Every story was a banger, and I genuinely had such a good time reading this collection.

I especially loved The Flicker, The Cataloguer of Deceit, and especially The Apologist. That one was freaking wild. I finished it and just had to sit there for a moment because… what did I just read? 😂

I really loved the creativity in this collection. The writing style, the ideas, the weirdness, the dark humor, and just the completely unexpected places some of these stories went. There were so many moments where I thought, “How does an author even come up with this?”

It’s weird, dark, creative, sometimes disturbing, and sometimes just plain fun. And somehow, every story felt like it had something different to offer.

Definitely a book I’d recommend if you’re into short stories that are a little strange and unpredictable. Go into this one without knowing too much and just let the stories do their thing.

Such a great collection. 5/5 stars for me. ⭐️

Here's a book that feels like one big adventure in wonderland.

The Last Days of Magic Stories by Ian Rosales Casocot made me travel back in time together with the characters. I enjoyed the writing style and the different themes in each short story.

And super love it because it is set in Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, Philippines.

A book I would recommend especially if you love Philippine folklore and history with elements and vibes of:

Witch Hat Atelier (pens, inks, paper)
Kimi No Nawa (the flashback when Taki saw Mitsuha's past)
One Piece (drawing maps)
Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs (chickens disappearing and then falling from the sky)
The Picture of Dorian Gray (youth and dark secrets)
Thriller (lights flickering)
Political intrigue

Then you would definitely enjoy The Last Days of Magic by Ian Rosales Casocot as well!

I am so grateful to be a part of this book tour.

Heya! It's my stop for the Last Days of Magic by Ian Rosales Casocot (@sandwichspy) Book Tour arranged by @talkbookishtomeph and @anvilpublishing.

📚📚

#bookreview
Like in Kpop, The Last Days of Magic is a repackaged album of Heartbreak & Magic that includes the original storylist alongside a few new stories and an updated artistic concept.

Not my first time reading Casocot's works since I’ve read Heartbreak and Magic before (which I liked!). But getting to revisit some of those stories in this new collection, along with the additional ones, made me appreciate his writing even more. There’s just something about his storytelling that really hits. Though I admit, his writing can feel a bit intimidating at first, it somehow becomes more welcoming as you go along.

This collection of short stories is wondrous, heartbreaking, and magical. There’s a story for everyone. Interestingly written, the book offers a variety of stories that will truly affect you in one way or another. You get time travel, an alternate history/universe with supernatural elements, horror, magical realism, speculative fiction, fantasy, and the like.

The Last Days of Magic is composed of twelve (12) stories. In Heartbreak & Magic, my favorite was “The Flicker.” Newsflash! It’s still my favorite in this new collection. I can’t even come up with the right adjectives to describe how insane and brutal this story was.

My next favorite is probably The Death of His Majesty. An alternate history that was perfectly crafted and told. For now, I’ll choose to believe that this story is the truth, since there’s a chance that it really happened—after all, the Philippines has such interesting folklore and mythology. Eme 😆

A Strange Map of Time started slow for me as I was familiarizing myself again with Ian’s prose. It was somehow confusing at first, but the payoff was very satisfying. This story was a journey for me, much like what the main character experienced.

(2/2)

Fourth is The Sugilanon of Epefania’s Heartbreak, which is both astonishing and heartbreaking at the same time. Lastly, there’s The Apologist, where the resemblance to the real world is uncanny. It’s terrifying.

I started The Last Days of Magic with only the idea that there would be some magic inside, but what I got was a book about losing it after all. The magic in this book is not a matter of spells, it’s a matter of imagination, memory, history, and all the strange things we tend to stop believing in as we get older. The way Sir Ian mixed so much of the familiar, the historical, the horrid and the mundane with folklore and history? It’s sooo beautiful and interesting. And while at it, the prose will throw you into something completely new. ☝🏻

‎There are stories that stood out to me because there were times when I found myself thinking about The Flicker, The Apologist and of course, The Last Days of Magic (!!!) even after I finished reading the other stories. 🥹 I also appreciated how this book challenged me. It is not the easiest book to read (especially at the beginning) but it is good. THAT good. This is a book that will make you stare at the wall for a few minutes once you finish it.

‎And when I did finish it, I think I understood the title a bit differently. (It did hit me differently.) Maybe the last days of magic are not necessarily about the end of magic. Maybe they’re about people slowly forgetting how to be amazed by things. And to be honest, I think that’s what made this collection stay with me. 🙂

‎“To forget our magic is to forget what makes us who we are.” #TheLastDaysfMagicBookTour #TBTMPHxAnvil #TBTMPHBookTour

I actually read the book with them, and maybe that’s why the book did hit me differently. :) They’re the best. 🥹 by @anvilpublishing
