I am used to being judged for writing in my books.

"You're defacing it!", they said.

"It's sacrilege!", some added.

"That won't be readable anymore for the next readers!"

Always, never failing to remind me that a book is only loved when it is kept away from dust, creases, and most of all markings.

But how else would I have coped up with my life that constantly throws me the almost insurmountable tests and hurdles? Books have often saved me in many of my most difficult moments -- and I found comfort and safety in the margins as I immersed fully into what I'm reading.

Books never judged me and yet the world does.

I kept annotating my books anyway, until one day, an author saw what I was doing.

"Uh-oh, here it comes, another judgment", I thought.

But I didn't receive criticism from this author. Instead, what I got shocked me.

She said, "Hi MJ, I really love how you put so much thought and effort into reading the book I wrote. I really appreciate it! Thank you so much."

It made me feel like I did something so meaningful.

An author of the book I annotated appreciated what I did! How wonderful!

Now, we've collaborated for a workshop on how to annotate meaningfully, using positive psychology as a framework, and learning the POV of the author on how to write creatively. And that event? Huge success!!!

That author who believed in me is no other than the Claire Betita de Guzman. Best-selling author and one of the most generous people I've met. Thank you Tita Claire!

With the full support of Anvil Publishing. Even providing the books and the venue. Thank you Anvil Publishing Team and NBS!

Participants from different parts of the Philippines gathered in that room and left the workshop feeling refreshed and inspired to read more and annotate soulfully.

And I am deeply grateful for that.

sometimes, i have this thing wherein i resent being an ate so much because i feel the weight of everyone else’s expectations. ‘tas nabasa ko ang kuwento ni iska at yung pressure sa kaniya, i felt seen kahit bunso siya. grabe lang ang timing nito kasi iska somehow helped me rediscover parts of myself as she discovered hers.

overall, it was quite an easy and interesting read. there were parts wherein i cringed for iska, but when i brought it up in the book club yap, apparently isa ako sa minority na ‘di yun naranasan HAHAHA i laughed with iska, nahirapan din ako para sa kaniya, and i cheered for her, like how everyone else who love iska did. pakiramdam ko tuloy isa ako sa mga ate ni iska, ‘di lang ako tumanda kasama nila kasi andito pa naman yung kampana 👀🔔

Hello, friends! 🧡 Can we take a moment to appreciate the people who live with writers? Last weekend’s beach jaunt with my little family, Alfred and Ulric, who’ve survived life with *this* writer - enduring my deadlines, my doubts, my tired days and sleepy moments (a most mysterious exhaustion after just sitting in front of my laptop 😂).

My family has found ways to love me that have made this writing life possible: through - and despite of - my silences and overthinking, my rants, and my meltdowns (na hindi naman lagiii, I am mostly calm. 😂 right?) @ulricdeguzman

My family has made room for all of this. 🥹 Writing, and the life that comes with it is rife with so much uncertainty, and many, many challenges. But it’s Alfred and Ulric, truly, who understand the person I become when I’m trying to make sense of the world through words.

The writing may be mine, but the life that makes it possible, is ours. 🌷

Thanks for being here. 🧡
