A beautiful and calm morning for our Gold DofE team. The mist and Autumn colours made the lake feel extremely tranquil today!

What a fantastic effort from team @limbpower on the weekend. They came to us to raise funds for their fantastic charity who support amputees, those with limb differences and their families. They canoed the full length of lake Windermere over 2 days and cooked themselves a 3 course dinner over a fire. Day 1 was warm and sunny with a tail wind and they opted for tandem canoes and then day 2 was very Cumbrian with heavy showers and strong winds so we rafted together to help ensure we could finish the journey! What a massive achievement for all those involved 👏👏👏 taken in Windermere by @anyonecanuk

At the weekend my mum took on a challenge in aid of @limbpower, a charity that has supported me since my amputation. A 10-mile canoe along the length of Lake Windermere. They finished… just as a storm was coming in!

This is what she says on her fundraising page. Support her - and the charity - if you can (https://bit.ly/4e5OgI3)

“Our son, Thomas, was born with a congenital deformity. He spent 10 years in and out of Great Ormond Street trying to fix it. Procedures ranged from soft tissue release surgery to Ilizarov frame construction to numerous casts and braces. At the age of 9/10, he made the choice himself: “Mum, there is another choice, I can either carry on like this, or we can just chop it off, and I could be Jonnie Peacock”.

And so began his life as an amputee. He is now 17 and thriving. LimbPower has been a big part of that journey. Just two months post-amputation, he attended an ‘I Can’ Camp with the charity. Along with other amputees of a similar age, he gained the confidence to try anything, even with one leg! From the climbing wall to kayaking, to paddleboarding, he tried it all. That experience set him up for the life he has today - he doesn’t let anything stop him. LimbPower have been there for us ever since. From helping us navigate PE at school to supporting us to make sure he gets the prosthetic care that he needs.

That is why I have signed up for the challenge: canoeing 10 miles across Lake Windermere. My upper body strength is not my forte! But your donation will be a huge support as I push myself to keep going. Even a small donation will be greatly appreciated.”

A huge congratulations to our river runners on the Tweed last week! What a fabulous week we had with everyone descending the River Tweed over 3 days. We paddled from Peebles to Abbotsford, covered 23 miles, enjoyed cooking sausages on the riverside, saw Herons galore, a random family of Penguins, had a sneaky visit to a cafe, paddled plenty of grade 1 rapids, took on the Fairnilee grade 2 rapids and no-one swam! A successful expedition! by @anyonecanuk

As the Summer season of @dofeuk draws to a close, we’re thrilled to have helped 24 young people complete their expeditions at all three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. These young people demonstrated incredible determination resilience and positivity throughout their journey and we’re incredibly proud of them all. Each faced more challenges than most due to living with a disability and needing a provider who understands and can make the necessary adaptations. Our water-based expeditions eliminated the need for long walks, carrying heavy kit, and by providing a supportive seat in the canoe for those benefiting from back support on a long journey, extra time and patience we have been able to enable more people to complete their award. They’ve all worked so hard for this award and it’s truly well deserved! Well done to everyone!

Oli has perfectly captured the adventure of his Silver expedition in his blog:

A HUGE congratulations to our Gold @dofeuk team who completed their expedition today! The whole team have now completed their Gold Award, with their next step being the Palace 🥳 This is such a huge achievement for every individual as it’s a massive undertaking the Gold Award, and all of them live with a disability adding to the challenge to complete their award. Well done team, and Leo says wohooooooooooooo! He’s very excited for you all to have completed it 😊 taken in Windermere Lake District by @anyonecanuk
