Proper outdoor adventures for people with all manner of additional needs and none.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

At the weekend my mum took on a challenge in aid of @limbpower, a charity that has supported me since my amputation. A 10-mile canoe along the length of Lake Windermere. They finished… just as a storm was coming in!

This is what she says on her fundraising page. Support her - and the charity - if you can (https://bit.ly/4e5OgI3)

“Our son, Thomas, was born with a congenital deformity. He spent 10 years in and out of Great Ormond Street trying to fix it. Procedures ranged from soft tissue release surgery to Ilizarov frame construction to numerous casts and braces. At the age of 9/10, he made the choice himself: “Mum, there is another choice, I can either carry on like this, or we can just chop it off, and I could be Jonnie Peacock”.

And so began his life as an amputee. He is now 17 and thriving. LimbPower has been a big part of that journey. Just two months post-amputation, he attended an ‘I Can’ Camp with the charity. Along with other amputees of a similar age, he gained the confidence to try anything, even with one leg! From the climbing wall to kayaking, to paddleboarding, he tried it all. That experience set him up for the life he has today - he doesn’t let anything stop him. LimbPower have been there for us ever since. From helping us navigate PE at school to supporting us to make sure he gets the prosthetic care that he needs.

That is why I have signed up for the challenge: canoeing 10 miles across Lake Windermere. My upper body strength is not my forte! But your donation will be a huge support as I push myself to keep going. Even a small donation will be greatly appreciated.”

Duke of Edinburgh Gold Expedition ✅

Whoop whoop!! After 3 years of delays last week I had the wonderful opportunity to finally complete my Gold DofE expedition with a fantastic group of people on the beautiful Lake Windermere.

Unlike my other expeditions this one was water based where I learnt to canoe, sail and wild camp. Thank you to @anyonecanuk for making this so inclusive, it was great to compete it independently I couldn’t have asked for a nicer group of people to achieve it with.

Well done everyone and hopefully see you at the Palace in May.

Good day of @mtntraining cpd with @anyonecanuk, learning ways of making climbing more accessible to people with additional needs. We covered some theory & practice of support including conversations (when to have them & what to speak about), helpful aids in communication, wheelchair belaying (great potential use of the ohm/ohmega here), sight guiding basics and hoists for therapeutic or experiential climbing. Some coffee was also drunk.

It blows my mind that some walls still don’t allow seated belaying! 🤯

I listen to you all, I hear the problems faced with getting outdoors and change is coming in 20Twix

We're working with National Trust, National Trails UK and this year we start with Forestry England

I already have venues lined up, who will offer all-terrain chairs for people to use

We will be bringing all-terrain chair experiences to towns and at events and festivals

In Northants we will be working with both councils and Discover Northamptonshire to promote accessible places and trails

I'll personally be running powerchair explorer workshops, giving people the confidence and ability to go exploring

Please believe change is coming, be hopeful for what it will bring and get involved, as without your involvement none of this will work.

I believe in YOU and I need you to believe in YOU too x

I remember the anxiety I had the first time Pip went away, with support, climbing for a week. Year on year her confidence has grown and so has mine as I've learnt to trust the experts that run this trip.
It's a tall order to find the right level of challenge- not so easy that it is without progress and not so hard as to be impossible. Pacing activities so as to build strength but not exhaust and also remembering that friendship and teamwork are also part of the reward.
This year @able2adventure_scotland teamed up with Vicky from @anyonecanuk and tutors from @glenmorelodge to give the great staff ratio that was needed to do all this for a group, all at different stages of their climbing journey. Just missing Kara this year.
We're always grateful to their foresight that such an amazing opportunity would work - and thanks for the photos!

Wow, that's the end of our annual Paraclimbing course with @glenmorelodge .

There are a few more photos from our other team on the mountain day and photos from today's final climbing session onsite.

All throughout the week we look for how individuals wish to progress and today ended with gear placements, rigging and clipping as well as a few more climbs!

A big thanks to the wonderful staff team at GL, our volunteers and a very special friend of ours Vicky from @anyonecanuk who helped to make this happen.

Now to plan the next one...

From family fun to adapted activities, there's an outdoor adventure for everyone here in the Lake District, Cumbria 💜 ⛰

Here are just a few to choose from:

✅ Adventure centres like the @bendriggtrust and @calvertlakes offer residential experiences for those with disabilities
✅ E-bike hire is available across the area with companies like @arragonscycles offering an easier (and enjoyable) way to get around.
✅ Enjoy the great outdoors with young adventurers: family-friendly activities like a kids' ghyll scrambling session with @lakelandascents mean everyone can get involved
✅ @anyonecanuk offer outdoor adapted adventure activities for people living with a disability

🧗‍♀️ Glasgow GCC 5th June - 5 30 to 8.30pm
Intro session for Plus size climbers with @every_body_outdoors followed by
Training Discussion for Instructors - GCC cafe. -

Instructors can come and observe the session and then join for a discussion around harness availability and fitting for plus sizes, restrictions in Climbing Walls & how this translates to outdoors. We will also chat about the best ways forward to make people feel welcome and comfortable. How to run future sessions and hopefully build up a network of local climbers. Be part of making climbing a diverse and welcoming space.
