What I didn’t know about film directors…

Having the opportunity to watch @walkwithw during the audition process for their upcoming short film really changed my perspective on what a director’s role actually is.

Before this, I mostly associated directing with having a creative vision. This day showed me it’s knowing how scenes should look, how stories should feel, and how characters should be portrayed. However, watching the auditions unfold made me realise how much of directing is also about collaboration and trust.

There’s such a fine line between holding onto your own vision for a character while still giving actors enough creative freedom to bring their own interpretation, emotions, and characteristics into the role. Watching that balance in real time helped me understand just how intricate the role of a director can be.

The room felt safe and open enough for actors to play with the characters they were auditioning for. There was space for experimentation, adjustments, and honest performances. You could feel how much the environment impacted the energy in the room.

What stood out to me most was how quickly small changes could completely shift the tone of a scene; a pause, shift in movement, the way two actors interacted with each other. Depending on the direction given, the storyline could feel heavier, softer, more tense or more emotional.

Watching director Jamal and producer @aoniyide communicate those adjustments so clearly and shift the portrayal of the characters in such a short amount of time made me realise that directing is just as much about understanding people as it is understanding film.
