From Elie Wiesel’s Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech. This is the bit that precedes that often shared excerpt:

“Because if we forget, we are guilty, we are accomplices. We could not prevent their deaths the first time, but if we forget them they will be killed a second time. And this time, it will be our responsibility.

And then I explained to him how naive we were, that the world did know and remain silent.”

We cannot pretend that silence is okay. We cannot pretend away that in this brutal era of rising tribalism and ethnonationalism that bad actors are using platforms like this to broker in hate to fuel antisemitism, racism, and fear and suspicion of the other.

And we cannot pretend away or untether how much the worst symbols of propaganda—the commonplace tropes of Nazi hate that have become too common here in the US, in the fringes of one, major political party—is shaping this global conflict, perceptions of it 🤍💙 by @aparnamuk
