This weekend marks for me an abbreviated, but most welcome return trip to the Asian American Journalists Association Annual Convention. @leezeltanglao kicked things off by moderating a panel on immigrant rights, reproductive justice, and media accountability with @juliachanb @19thnews @cbaaler @napawf @freedominc. Following that was the MacArthur Foundation-sponsored AAPI Nonprofit and Community Media Executive Summit, which Leezel and I had the honor of attending on behalf of @tayohelp, where we were treated to lively conversations from the likes of @calmatters @asamnews @invisibleinstitute @sahanjournal @katherinereynoldslewis @independentjournalists @jinkding @aji_fellowships @angileeshah @cvilletomorrow @objectivejournalism @weareajp @aparnamuk @sejournalists. The afternoon saw workshops on vital topics like caregiving from @aarp @miaestellewarren @fi2w @teenaapeles @chjreportinghealth as well as managing visual trauma and compassion fatigue from @moniquewoophoto @washingtonpost @benjovland @mprnews @cmoutier @afspnational @soosuhn @startribune @jaechongpix @apnews. How extraordinary to give my first real acceptance speech at the grand age of 61. Just when we think we are past our prime, a magical surprise comes across the chasm to remind us of our power and our relevance. Truly grateful for the recognition for the years I have toiled in sustainability and social impact and appreciate those who have seen me, supported me, and recognized me along with my brilliant colleagues at @mcpstrategies. Thank you to #WSLA and @trellis_group for leading the way 💚✨

What happens when you put a bunch of science journalists in the same room for 5 days? A controlled existential crisis...and proof that entropy shall *not* prevail 😅 💪🏽

So happy to see some of my fellow @schmidtsciences award winners from around the globe. 🌏 Science and journalism in our country are under pressure, but undoubtedly resilient.

It was a very good (and very American) summer for me, and I can’t believe it’s officially in the rearview. I made it back to Detroit, Denver, Salt Lake City, and Philadelphia, rode @thecanyonspirit through Utah and the Rocky Mountains, saw lots of live music, went to some great parties, and got in lots of quality time with friends.

Many thanks to all the people and places who made the summer of 2025 so joyful, despite all the things.

🎤 On September 23 in New York City, voices from across the climate movement — Indigenous leaders, grassroots activists, artists, investors, and culture-makers — will gather to listen and be heard, so we can create a more united narrative.

When diverse voices come together to break down silos, we craft narratives strong enough to shift culture, power, and policy. Story becomes not only a reflection of who we are, but a force that can move institutions, mobilize communities, and imagine new futures.

The #ClimateMicDrop Summit is time and place to build those narratives through dialogue, design, and vision. The time for courage, creativity, and collaboration is always now. So let’s pass the mic and raise our voices together 🙌

Miami me lo confirmó.

Fue una semana muy intensa, pero valió la pena.
Asistir al Knight Media Forum es un privilegio que no doy por sentado; es donde se toman decisiones “por invitación” solamente.

Este año me dediqué a recordarles a aquellos que tienen los recursos y el poder que una gran parte de nuestra comunidad está bajo ataque y no podemos hacer como que volteamos al otro lado.

Las noticias locales no son para salvar al periodismo, sino a la democracia.

Este no es el momento de permanecer callados. Tampoco es el momento de lucrar con el dolor y el miedo de nadie.

También tuve tiempo de reflexionar que @conectaarizona nació hace casi cinco años en medio de una pandemia y restricciones fronterizas como un producto de JOY, de júbilo, de resilencia, de gozo.

Y lo seguímos siendo, incluso si en estos tiempos tan desafiantes. Tenemos muchos amigos y aliados, gente bonita que quiere que todo nos salga bien y que nos echan porras… y se siente muy bien que estamos construyendo puentes más fuertes que cualquier muro.

Gracias Knight Media Forum por haber sido de abrazo que necesitábamos en esta época de incertidumbre.
