Between Conversations

The city was only a brief stop in Isabella's day.

Born in Cresskill, New Jersey, and now studying Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at the University of Pennsylvania, she was in New York with a friend, moving through the city with the easy rhythm of someone enjoying a day without a strict itinerary.

We met in a passing moment. She was on her way to grab something to drink before rejoining the rest of her friends, pausing just long enough for a conversation before disappearing back into the flow of the afternoon.

There was a quiet confidence in the way she carried herself, curious, thoughtful, and present. Perhaps that's no surprise for someone immersed in a discipline that asks its students to wrestle with the ideas, institutions, and questions that shape societies. Philosophy, politics, and economics rarely offer simple answers, but they cultivate a habit of looking beyond the obvious.

Our exchange was brief, the kind of encounter New York makes possible every day: two strangers whose paths intersect for only a few minutes before the city carries them in different directions.

For Sammy, summer is less about escape and more about breathing room.

Born in Chicago and now spending time in New York City with family, a tradition she keeps every year, she is enjoying a rare stretch of calm after an important milestone: completing and funding her first year as a teacher.

The accomplishment represents more than the end of a school year. It marks the beginning of a career dedicated to helping others learn and grow, a responsibility she embraced with both determination and optimism. Like many first-year educators, Sammy navigated the challenges, uncertainties, and rewards that come with stepping into the classroom for the first time. Now, with the pace of the academic year behind her, she is allowing herself time to slow down.

This summer, there are no grand plans. She is spending time with family, enjoying the city, and appreciating the quieter moments that are often hard to find during the school year.

Yet even as she settles into the present, Sammy carries a vision for the future.

I was deciding which subway to take home when I noticed her, caught mid frame as I lifted my camera. A moment later, she laughed, and we started talking. Jelixza is a model, on her way home to prepare for a virtual casting.

There was something about the way the city light fell on her, rushed yet graceful, as if New York itself had paused for her. Encounters like this remind me why I walk with my camera: not just to take portraits, but to meet the people who make this city feel alive.
