I didn’t know I needed this space until I stepped into it.

In the world that we live in, it is so important to find spaces like arte noir where people can come together to build community. This show has truly brought me into a space I wouldn’t have even thought about. Meeting all these uniquely inspiring artists from across the country who come together to share their own creative manifestations has been monumental in my art journey and I am so grateful to have been a part of this show.
Thank you:)

The show is still up all of February so go check it out!

When I traveled to Ghana for the first time, the home site of my ancestors, I visited the site known as the Point of No Return, one of the coastal holdings used by Swedish, French, and later British colonizers. Inside were a few small, dark rooms where hundreds of enslaved people were held before being forced onto ships. The spaces were cramped and suffocating, with thick residue from bodily fluids from those who had been confined there.

When I arrived, it was a three-hour drive to get to the location, which isn’t even a quarter of the journey some had to endure on foot. Thinking about the journeys these people endured, the people who were taken from their homes and forced to walk for days across regions before arriving at these holding sites, left me overwhelmed. by @aphroditrist

My piece engages this symbolism through the depiction of traditional Ghanaian fishing practices. The work is titled Tuesday, referencing the day reserved for honoring the spirits. This creates a space to hold recognition and remembrance for these bodies who were discarded and thrown into the sea. In the image, a fisherman sits in a small boat surrounded by forms that resemble water but slowly reveal themselves as mermaid-like figures rising from the ocean. The boat becomes a symbol of migration, transition, and movement across space and history. By
placing the fisherman within waters that carry the memory of the dead, the work reflects the tension between survival, cultural continuity, and the responsibility to remember and tell these histories. I create this work through the cultural language I learned in Ghana. Acts such as using the left hand or fishing on Tuesdays are understood as disrespectful. Referencing these customs allows me to reflect on the fear that what I have grown to know about everyday cultural normalities may unknowingly dishonor my ancestors in ways i am unaware of. by @aphroditrist

‘Tuesday’ depicts an unknowing figure fishing in turbulent water. As a descendant of immigrant families, I have learned to recognize a dialogue formed around the context of land based identity. And with that The knowledge that the world I live in is different than the one my families had prepared for and now my heritage and my ancestors story takes place in a foreign land (one I call home) in hopes to find a place to belong. This piece reflects on my life’s question: How can we honor those who came before us without knowing their story. In a world that minimizes African history where can I find my birthright of truth by @aphroditrist
