A week after Grizโ€™s comeback festival, the single largest day of protest in American history takes place.

Weโ€™re attending festivals playing modern iterations of music created by immigrants & Black folks and queers during one of the most anti immigrant and anti-queer times in US history.

Last month, a prominent right wing provocateur is shot & killed and his death is used as a justification for another crack down on free speech thatโ€™s critical of the president. But we love raves and festivals because of how free we feel to express true ourselves.

The contradictions between the magic of the rave and the horror of systemic fascism are going to continue to intensify. I wrote this to help the community decide if we are going be an opiate to the collapse or a spiritual/cultural rebellion against it. by @apollo.njuguna

Being in the African diaspora can be a really layered and challenging experience. For a the majority of my life, neither the Black American experience or my Kenyan heritage have felt fully authentic. In 2016 I distinctly remember I had an identity crisis because it felt like my blackness was broken. Iโ€™m not fluent in Swahili. I left Christianity at 17 (that one hits twice). The cookout recipes are almost completely different and my momโ€™s are unwritten. My dad introduced me to a good number of major Black American figures of the 19th & 20th century, but heโ€™d never be able to quote Martin or Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Popsโ€™ perpetual lament was that I didnโ€™t spend my free time reading John Mbiti or Ngugi Waโ€™Thiongo. I was one of only 3 Black kids on all the high school soccer teams. One of only 2 Black students who graduated top 10 out of a total of like 6 in my graduating class. I was too intimidated to rush a Black fraternity in college. There, I was the unmistakable black voice in organizations usually dominated by white folks. But the biggest challenge was that for 27 years I tolerated having no real memories of the nation I was born in, coincidedentally the literal cradle of humanity. That changed this month. I still donโ€™t feel fully culturally integrated and I donโ€™t think I will until I spend most of my time in majority Black/African spaces, but I do feel like Iโ€™ve finally reached another level and the journey has deepened significantly.

Roughly 48 hours before this show I was curled up on the floor of my bathroom with a bout of Norovirus that was churning my stomach like a cement truck. I had $110 in my checking account and I STILL drove 7 hours roundtrip to make it. Because if not Chicago Feb 22ndโ€ฆthen I wouldnโ€™t know the next time I could see him. COMING ON DURING THE MUHAMMAD ALI QUOTE IN THE INTRO BC LOUISVILLE IS YOUR HOMETOWN WAS SO COLD ๐Ÿ˜ญ

When we met I told him, โ€œYou really show people just how intelligent and sophisticated bass music can be. So much of the music coming out now is just harsh and hypeโ€” you are the clear answer to whatโ€™s missing.โ€

Itโ€™s both difficult and a gleeful fit of passion for me to find the precise words to capture @nikitathewicked. From the โ€˜villainโ€™ character, to the antiquated horror aesthetic, to the content, to the jazz & classical strings samples, subtle trap influences, and intricate percussion arrangements most of us didnโ€™t know were possibleโ€ฆ the Nikita, the Wicked project represents some of the highest overall artistic quality that Iโ€™ve seen in bass musicโ€”hands down. Heโ€™s at the leading edge of experimental hybrid bass.

The exposure to Leave You Alone, holy ghost, and LIKE ME songs hit me like novel sonic drugs. Heโ€™s the kind of artist youโ€™re waiting to discover when your typical palette isnโ€™t hitting the same, your daily streaming minutes have dipped, and youโ€™re yearning for something new. His music and the IDs he features on his posts BROKE OPEN AN ENTIRELY NEW SECTOR OF MY TASTE in EDM. Bc of him, I started listening to @svdkomusic and @sevskybass and @jkylxhyde and @projectarya_ @jpkyyy. And because of all them, my tastes have forever been raised. Nikita has inspired a distinct, new face of my dj soundscape as well (Evolutions mix coming out soon).

All I can say is thank you @nikitathewicked. Youโ€™re really like THAT. by @apollo.njuguna
