Move to Change Artist Spotlight: @apollo_vaughn @apollo_vaughn work sits at the intersection of dance, archival practice, teaching, and cultural reclamation, using the moving body as a site for preserving, questioning, and reimagining Black histories and knowledge. Through choreography, improvisation, and frameworks like Africana Ancestral Improv Intelligence (AAII) and Ibeji, he explores how Black people can become authors of their own histories and create new ways of transmitting what the archive cannot hold. As an American of African descent, he is inspired by the meeting of Africana ways of knowing the body and the Euro-Western contemporary dance traditions he was taught to value. He is interested in what happens when Africana rhythms, polycentric movement, and nonlinear relationships to time meet the staging, composition, and choreographic modes of artists like Pina Bausch, Ohad Naharin, Juliano Nunes, Thomas “Talawa” Presto, Kyle Abraham, Camille A. Brown, Akram Khan, Crystal Pite, and Azure Barton. @apollo_vaughn -/Rorshack is a black-and-white screendance exploring shadow work, fractured identity, and the excavation of the mind and body. Through a confrontation with anti-Blackness, internalized violence, and the pressure to conform to Euro-Western aesthetics, the film becomes a dance with the self, peeling away constructed personas toward a more integrated sense of being. I introduce to you the trailer of my latest work COLLAPSE. Inspired by endings. The end of American democracy, the American empire at the end of its 250 lifecycle, end of the AI bubble, end of un-examined patriarchy, and the potential for something new. This work examines time as cycle, the transition, the tide, ebb and flow, rise and fall, death and rebirth through the lens of patriarchal collapse. I had the pleasure of working with 13 amazing artists at @iu_contemporarydance over 10 days and together we built this beautiful work. I couldn’t be more proud of them and the piece itself. I’m thankful to have witnessed such a beautiful process of creation this past week with @apollo_vaughn . Gaining knowledge & wisdom from your investigation of the body & how stories are released, revealed, & recycled through the specific language of body,mind & spirit . Watching the birth of “Collapse” was like witnessing a Phoenix rise,growing New wings and carrying a new vision of purpose and possibilities. So grateful for the last three weeks in artistic residency with @thomastalawapresto. I had the opportunity to advance my Talawa Technique certification (now the highest certified person in the U.S.), I taught the musical theatre students, assisted Thomas in the dance department, and coached an international trainee. It was everything I needed from good company, to good food, to intense training, and lots of friend time. Can’t wait till the next time ❤️❤️❤️ by @apollo_vaughn

And just like that I’m all done with my time at Hollins! Thesis submitted, performance done, 60 credits/14 months spent with an amazing cohort of gifted movers/thinkers, so many memories, a few countries, and soooo much new work to play with!
