Join us for the opening of ZERO AND ONE CHAIRS
📍this friday, september 25, 7pm!

The exhibition ZERO AND ONE CHAIRS was developed as part of MATCH!, an ongoing initiative by the Department of Applied Photography and Time-Based Media that explores the synergetic potential of student teams from different departments. This year, in collaboration with the Department of Industrial Design, projects emerged that bring product design and photography into new relationships through questions of function and factuality.

Seen from the perspective of Applied Photography, the object and thus the chair, is a welcome protagonist. Photography’s multiple applied genres are cited here: documentary, fashion, advertising, architecture and the portrait. When the function in Industrial Design coalesces with the idea of the purpose in Applied Photography, the question of factuality emerges.
Be not mistaken: The most literal things are often the most confusing and enigmatic.
Between what it is and how it is*, worlds unfold. We put the images to work.

Featuring works by:
Benjamin Kos/ Emil Leckert
Caterina di Muzio & Francis Grill/ Elisa Oberth
Laura Schagowetz/ Yoomin Sun
Magdalena Chan/ Virginia Pagliarini
Nejra Maslicova/ Sina Svetina
ojaswit/ Marlene Egger
Pavle Banovic/ Julius Esser
Vanessa Kügerl & Leila Schiraz/ Ambrosia Koeb
Yulli Kwon/ Vincent Paul Müller & Charlotte Vecsei

The collaborative works are exhibited at AIL, Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab, Georg-Coch-Platz 2, 1010 Vienna,
and on the billboards in front of the entrance of the University.

Organized and curated by: Yasmina Haddad and Elisabeth Wildling, supported by Nora Mayr.
Opening hours:

Marie Luise Baumschlager (@marieluise.baumschlager): Zwitschern

The diploma project “Zwitschern“ examines how people, when looking at photographs, automatically form ideas about personality – based on the sound of a voice, detached from the semantic meaning of speech. The work proceeds from the question of how an altered voice can be made visible as a moment of physical and identity-related shift. Its starting point is illness as a moment in which the taken-for-grantedness of one’s own body breaks down.

Marie Luise Baumschlager (@marieluise.baumschlager): Zwitschern

Marie Luise Baumschlager (@marieluise.baumschlager): Zwitschern

Marie Haefner (@marie_haefner): Aura

“Aura“ examines epilepsy and its visual representation, drawing on Marie Haefner‘s experience of the condition. At its centre are so-called auras — shifts in perception, consciousness, and sensation that occur in everyday life and usually remain invisible to those around the person experiencing them. While epilepsy is frequently represented in media contexts through the image of a seizure, this work engages with less visible, yet often more frequent, manifestations of the condition.

During the academic year 2025/2026, Students of the department of Applied Photography and Time-Based Media investigated their own gaze, how it is informed by knowledge and beliefs, how it is distracted and corrupted by the hyperactivity of images themselves.

Drawing from John Berger’s „Ways of Seeing“ (1972), we explored the differences between seeing, looking, watching, observing, surveilling, and gazing, asking what remains invisible, and why. How do we engage in visual thinking?

What role does imagination play in shaping and producing visual concepts? In the works, focus lays on seeing as an active practice—one that precede conception and production. Looking (again) as an essential tool for the photographic process and as a necessity to stay in touch with our present environment and conditions: IRL, in company, through our eyes and hands, physically and emotionally engaged, constituting what is present to us as we are.

Diploma project by Marie Luise Baumschlager @marieluise.baumschlager : ZWITSCHERN

excerpts from my ongoing photobook project, ‘my skin is rancid’ are still on view at the Angewandte Festival, as part of the Ways of Seeing exhibition of the department of applied photography & time-based media.
today (july 3) till 9pm, and tomorrow from 11 am to 6pm.
4th floor,
schwanzer trakt,
oskar kokoschka platz 2.

this project is an exploration of what happens when disability not only informs, but also mediates and activates artistic production. through compulsive image-making and interventions in darkroom processes, my obsessive-compulsive disorder participates in the creation process itself. the resulting images emerge from a process of failed refinement, where attempts to resolve discomfort instead generate new forms of distortion. as the negatives get denser, colours shift, and the myth of the neutral photograph begins to fall apart, the images take on new forms and meanings. alongside the images, i produced texts in the form of automatic writing during each instance of a compulsive urge. i penned down whatever words came to me, in whatever order, only occasionally emerging as full sentences or coherent thoughts.

WAYS OF SEEING — Poster Newspaper

We’re excited to share WAYS OF SEEING, a poster newspaper created as a summary publication of the EXERCISES program within the annual theme WAYS OF SEEING 2025/2026 at the Department of Applied Photography and Time-Based Media.

When does merely looking at something or somebody turn into an active process of seeing?
One that comes before conception and image production - not as a passive condition, but as a skill that can be trained, stretched, and questioned? Exercised, even?
In the context of applied photography, the program mirrors an aspect of our professional reality: A given subject, object, or theme is translated into an image within a short timespan, challenging photographers to work intuitively and improvised.

What happens then, when this logic is brought into the art school?
Over the winter semester, a program titled EXERCISES unfolded from this question.
nine seemingly nonsensical terms were collectively proposed and agreed upon within the group, shaping the rhythm of the semester as much as its content: In weekly editorial meetings we shared and discussed different approaches, methods, aesthetics, perceptions, and interpretations. Images were edited and sequenced on the wall, week after week.
Once the works are assembled, another movement becomes possible.

Come by, browse through the publication and our exhibition, and take a copy home for €18.

All proceeds from our bar and from the sale of Ways of Seeing go directly to the crowdfunding campaign for Zakariya Alhaddad.
To leave and start a life in Vienna with his three kids, Zakariya needs financial proof of €25,000.

Every copy, every drink, and every contribution helps. Graphic Design: @claudia_holzinger taken in Die Angewandte by @applied.photography

The Department of Applied Photography and Time-Based Media warmly invites you their exhibitions as part of to the Festival of @dieangewandte
titled

᭙ꪖꪗડ ꪮᠻ ડꫀꫀⅈꪀᧁ

Students from the Department of Applied Photography and Time-Based Media examine their own ways of seeing: how perception is shaped by knowledge and belief, and how it is distracted and corrupted by the hyperactivity of images themselves.
Beginning with John Berger’s Ways of Seeing (1972), we explore the distinctions between seeing, looking, watching, observing, monitoring, and the gaze, asking what remains invisible—and why. How do we engage with visual thinking? What role does imagination play in the development and production of visual concepts?
The works presented focus on seeing as an active practice—one that precedes both conception and production. Looking (again) becomes an essential tool of the photographic process and a necessary way of remaining connected to our contemporary environment: IRL, in the company of others, through our eyes and hands, physically and emotionally engaged, thereby constituting what is present to us in the moment.
