It’s Healthcare Foodservice Workers Week, and we’re celebrating the incredible team members who help nourish our patients, visitors, and coworkers every day!

on Audrey Gurkin
Director of Marketing

Audrey Gurkin has worked for UNC Health Appalachian for the past five years as the Director of Marketing. Audrey says what she loves most about her job is that “no two days are the same, and I get to work with incredibly talented team members who are genuinely committed to making a difference. I also love that my work allows us to tell the stories of our patients, providers, and team members while helping people understand the healthcare resources available right here in the High Country. I love being able to take an idea, turn it into something meaningful, and see how it can ultimately make a difference in our community.”

When she’s not at work, Audrey enjoys spending time outdoors or reading a good book. She and her husband, Brent, have a daughter who works in probate law, and one of their favorite things to do together is travel to the coast. by @apprhs

This week, we’re celebrating our 71 Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) who are an essential part of our One Great Team at UNC Health Appalachian.

Our Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants bring expertise, compassion and a commitment to exceptional care to every patient they serve. From primary care and specialty services to hospitals and clinics throughout our region, APPs help patients navigate their health care and work toward healthier lives.

🌟Employee Spotlight🌟
on Maddi Daniels Crowe
Appalachian Behavioral Health Hospital

For the past five years, Maddi Daniels Crowe has served as a Case Manager at Appalachian Regional Behavioral Health Hospital, where she also leads the Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit team.

In her role, Maddi assesses patients’ outpatient needs, completes assessments, develops treatment plans, collaborates with family members, and coordinates discharge planning. She also manages the Case Management/Crisis schedule and compiles monthly data for both departments.

“It is a privilege to be able to show kindness to patients on the hardest days of their lives. The most rewarding part of my job is seeing patients grow and improve during their time in the hospital and being able to discharge them as a happier, healthier version of themselves,” Maddi said.

Maddi graduated from UNC Health Chapel Hill in 2020. Her dedication to supporting patients through challenging times reflects her commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care.

Outside of work, Maddi enjoys spending time at home with her husband, Luke, and their dogs, Chap and Sully. The couple is active at Victory Baptist Church in Newland, where Luke serves as the Youth Pastor. They also recently teamed up with friends to open First Fruits Acai in Banner Elk. by @apprhs
