✨ Heart Lamp: Selected Stories by Banu Mushtaq, translated by Deepa Bhasthi, published by And Other Stories ✨

🪔 Winner of the 2025 International Booker Prize, Heart Lamp is a collection of short stories written in Kannada and translated into English that shines a quiet but unflickering light on the inner lives of Muslim women in southern India.

🪔 Mushtaq writes with honesty and restraint, showing how the everyday lives of girls and women can hold both tenderness and sharp edges. With depictions of suffering, endurance and everyday acts of resistance, the stories feel at once rooted and far-reaching.

🪔 What makes the book stand out is its balance. The stories don’t romanticize suffering, nor do they smooth over contradictions. Instead, they reveal how oppression can be ordinary, even intimate, while still leaving space for wit, irony, and small sparks of hope. Additionally, the stories remind us that acts of resilience are rarely grand gestures, but small, everyday pushes against the weight of norms and expectations. The result is a reading experience that is gripping and gut-punching.

🪔 Bhasthi’s translation deserves its own praise. By preserving regional dialects and leaving vernacular words un-italicized. This choice, (described by some as “radical translation”), ensures that cultural specificity is never diluted, while still opening the stories to readers around the world.

🪔 Though grounded in Karnataka’s landscapes and traditions, Heart Lamp resonates far beyond its setting. Questions and burdens of gender, religion, family, poverty, and expectation are familiar across cultures, and Mushtaq’s characters embody them with depth and nuance.

🪔 An astonishing achievement, Heart Lamp shows how short fiction can hold both political weight and emotional intimacy. It is a remarkable collection - and a deserving landmark in writing and translation.

🧡 A moving story of history, healing, and hope — perfect for September read-alouds

Miya Wears Orange opens a gentle but powerful window into the history of residential schools through the eyes of a young girl.

During storytime, Miya hears about a child forced to attend a residential school — her hair cut, her favourite doll taken away, prevented from going home — and worries if it could happen to her. Fear and sadness surface, but her mother’s reassurance brings comfort: Indigenous children aren’t taken from their homes anymore. The story acknowledges that such complex feelings don’t vanish instantly, showing instead how children can process difficult truths with care and support.

Warm illustrations soften the weight of history, while the empowering message culminates in a call to wear orange not only on Orange Shirt Day but throughout the year as an act of remembrance and solidarity. Honest yet hopeful, this is a meaningful read-aloud — perfect for back-to-school and the days leading to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation — opening the door to age-appropriate conversations at home and in the classroom about truth, injustice, reconciliation, and hope.

This book is available in French: Le Chandail orange de Miya.

Nurture through Nature with Children’s Books is a wonderfully curated exhibition at the Museum of Edinburgh. The exhibition celebrates the natural world depicted in children’s books. It’s on until September 7, 2025.

Using books from the collection of the Museum of Childhood (which itself is worth a visit), the exhibition explores how children’s literature can inspire a love of nature, nurture creativity and support well-being.

The exhibition is presented by Museums & Galleries of Edinburgh in partnership with Scotland’s Early Literature for Children Initiative (SELCIE) in conjunction with the University of Edinburgh. It is excellent!

🌱 A quiet, heartwarming story about learning from the land, Dad, Is It Time to Gather Mint?: Celebrating the Seasons follows young Joshua as he connects with the plants, animals, and rhythms of his Traditional Territory in northeastern Ontario.

🌱 Written by Tyna Legault Taylor (Attawapiskat First Nation) and illustrated by Vietnamese Canadian artist Michelle Dao, this picture book captures a gentle moment between Joshua and his dad as they gather katakipanik/gaaminomaagobagak (mint) from the shores of Animbiigoo Zaagi’igan Anishinaabek.

🌱 Omushkegomowin and Anishinaabemowin words are thoughtfully included — colour-coded in red and green — and Joshua’s questions about seasonal harvesting open the door to intergenerational learning.

🌱 The sweet illustrations, grounded storytelling, and seasonal wisdom make this a beautiful introduction to land-based learning. Bonus: there’s a mint iced tea recipe at the end you can try at home.

🌱 A teacher’s guide is available to help teachers bring this story and series into their curricular programs.
