With Netflix’s new Little House on the Prairie introducing Laura Ingalls Wilder to a new generation, many viewers may be inspired to discover—or rediscover—the books that inspired the series.

In our profile, New York Times bestselling author and leading Wilder scholar Pamela Smith Hill invites both new readers and longtime fans to revisit Wilder’s semi-autobiographical novels with fresh eyes. She explores literary complexity, the challenge of avoiding presentism while confronting the books’ racist stereotypes and historical attitudes, and why she believes Wilder’s literary achievement remains “too good to be altogether lost.”

The world’s most awesome and awe-inspiring father - mine - turned 90 yesterday. This is the man from whom I inherited a love of family, the arts, theatre, music and nature, a talent for writing (boy, can he tell a story!), a fascination with history, unfailing politeness and kindness, and an addiction to books that I’ve given up fighting. Oh yes, and a devotion to animals and incurable wanderlust. Also yes, he can’t live without chocolate either. See? The apple (of his eye) hasn’t fallen far from the mighty tree at all. by @hiarpitaghosal

2025 brought a lot of travel to a lot of places, but it was hard to beat India for wow factor. Nothing compares to the marvel and majesty of the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort.

Coming face-to-face with majesty is often the source of humility that can make us appreciate the relative magnitude of things.
What moved me most was that the trip was planned for us by family members. And I am grateful, most of all, to have this experience as a family.

Thank you to @tamarindglobal.holidays for making all the arrangements for our safe and comfortable travel. And hats off to our Agra tour guide Jugnu for his knowledge, charm and photographic prowess. The shaky videos are mine. I was “wowing” at every turn. Pictures can’t do this justice. Humbled with #gratitude for the #globetrotting #travels to places new and familiar that 2025 brought.

Another successful bookish rendezvous. The Toronto International Festival of Authors has wrapped. I had the honour of returning to TIFA to host a panel “Vanishing Worlds, Fractured Homelands” with acclaimed - and extremely gracious - authors Ibtisam Azem (@ibtisam.azem) and Samrat Upadhyay who travelled from the US to speak about their books, The Book of Disappearance and DarkMotherland (@soho_press), respectively.

This thrilling opportunity came about through an invitation from TIFA’s director Roland Gulliver. As in year’s past, I thoroughly enjoyed talking books and authors with him for Sesaya Arts Magazine (Sesayarts.com).

What made this TIFA extraspecial was its partnership with Victoria University, where I got my undergraduate degree in literature and modern languages.

It was incredibly nostalgic to walk the same rooms and hallways where I went to classes so long ago and see them comfortably familiar all these years later. (I I remain grateful and a little awed by the photo my father took of me and Professor Northrop Frye at an awards event at Victoria College.

More TIFA is ahead at the historic Vic campus for a mini-festival featuring romance authors later this month.

A wonderful afternoon at The Word on the Street Toronto, a festival I look forward to every year.

This year, I met author @hollayghadery of @river_street_writes in person at last. She is lovely!

Thank you, @bookbankcanada for the gorgeous picture book Stormy Seas by @mbleatherdale & @eshakespeare (published by @annick_press) to read to my students. The Children’s Book Bank does tireless work to promote literacy, a love of reading, and put books in the hands of countless children.

And what a thrill to moderate a panel about motherhood in the art with authors and mothers @teri.vlass.writes, @lindsay.ziervogel & @catmargulis. Their books are unputdownable, as I will attest.

My other baby, Sesaya Arts Magazine @sesayarts sponsored the event and was again a proud media partner of WOTS. I love and cherish our collaboration and partnership with The Word on the Street.

Thank you, @michellegram for the close up of our new logo. Michelle runs @storydramasuite and is a teacher AND an actor - wow 😮 - and an outstanding person, besides!

Since that next day, I’ve been down with a cold, so the timing of the event was serendipitous.

All in all, it was a beautiful afternoon. Thank you, @torontowots, for being exceptional. Everyone at the festival does so much for so many, and we applaud and appreciate each and every one of you. Until next year…
