We are thrilled to see Sophie’s stunning design recognized by the Toronto Theatre Critics’ Awards with citation

“As the individual and collective psyches of the characters slowly unraveled, Rooney’s meticulous realism and scenic specificity grounded their psychological collapse, creating a claustrophobic milieu that audiences did not just observe, but had to physically endure. The production packed a gut-punch wallop and illustrated that punching power comes from the ground up.” — Arpita Ghosal

I spent the afternoon at Word on the Street on Saturday, and it was perfect: the weather was gorgeous, everyone in our household went home with multiple books, I joyfully ran into friends in the crowds, ate a fried plantain and crispy empanada, and then had just the best time on a panel about Motherhood and the Arts.

Participating in an actual @torontowots event was such a thrill! I try to keep my writing goals in check because once a book is out in the world everything is so ~fickle~ but WOTS has always been a bucket list item for me. And I loved sharing the @ontariocreates stage with @lindsay.ziervogel and @catmargulis, with such wonderful moderating by @hiarpitaghosal! We answered seriously but hey, we also laughed! The audience was also one of the best ever. It was really such a delight.

Thank you @torontowots! A weekend-long FREE event that takes over a city block and is devoted completely to books is not something to be taken lightly in the world today. I am grateful we have it here in Toronto 📚

3 lessons on writing from my panel chat at Toronto’s Word on the Street yesterday:

1. 🤰🏻Get out of the way: When asked by an audience member how writing a book and raising a child are the same, I shared about how little power or influence I feel I have over one or the other. “The book is the book and my job, as much as possible, is to get out of the way, and chip away at everything that is NOT the book.” Perhaps it’s the same with raising kids, to help them become their highest, most authentic selves 🤔

2. Nothing is happening here 💻: How do we find time to write, as busy mothers? (Is there any other kind?) I told the audience the same thing I told one of the authors I coach last week: “Nothing is happening here (on your computer screen) - it’s happening out there, in the conversations you’re having, the dialogue you’re hearing, the people that you’re meeting. That’s where the real writing happens.” (For me, anyway.)

3. ❤️‍🩹Writing and creativity are must-haves, not nice-to-haves: The reason books and stories are important and will never go away is because they connect us, heal us, grow us. Although I’ve struggled myself with making my books and writing a priority, events like #torontowots reaffirm the fact that writing and creativity are essential to our experience and evolution as human beings, and I can feel proud and responsible as a contributor to our collective cannon.

Thanks again to @torontowots @anotherstorybookshop @hiarpitaghosal @teri.vlass.writes and @lindsay.ziervogel for a fun, heartelt, meaningful discussion on motherhood, creativity, and writing.

And thank you to my amazing daughter and videographer who captured this clip for me! 😍🥰
