From the beach to the porch to the pews, Auntie April had one expectation for a week with family in Virginia (+ a couple of days in NC): live the daze of their lives. Not everyone was snapped but everyone was hugged, especially the lil ones who are getting so big! by @aprilpride_

This post is intended to be a harm reduction PSA on kratom and carries no judgment.

Stick with me. Keep reading.

I have two IG accounts. You’re reading my “life” account. You know… life as a mom, friend, and sh!t as random as I can be.

My “werk” account, @aprilpridecreates , is where I share what’s up with plant medicine, women’s health, my creative pursuits. Anything I create—with the exception of my two greatest creations. 👬

When I launched into cannabis eleven years ago, my boys were 5 and 8 years old, and I chose to separate mom/home life from weed/werk life so they weren’t entangled with 21+ lifestyle choices. They’re bigger now, but still not of legal age, nor are many of their friends—many of whom follow me here. SHOUT OUT!

Today I’m sharing this “april @ werk” clip featuring @uofwa substance use clinician & researcher Dr. Nathan Sackett speaking at the Psychedelic Salon I curate and host with @townhall_seattle because it’s about kratom. More specifically, it’s about products made with concentrated 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), a potent compound naturally present in kratom in tiny amounts but now concentrated into products far stronger than traditional whole-leaf kratom.

On Substack, I’ve been called out for vilifying these products, but not all plant medicines are created equal or with consumers’ best interests in mind. Kratom has been life-changing for many people recovering from opioid dependence. It has also devastated the lives of people who said yes to a “plant-based beverage” at a gas station without understanding what they were taking.

People I love, love kratom. They use traditional whole-leaf products—not concentrated 7-OH—and they’re living successful, enviable lives.

Like any mind-altering, potentially habit-forming substance, you don’t know the first time you say yes whether you’ll become an occasional or daily consumer.

If you’re a parent, educate yourself and consider talking to your kids about kratom. While some states have restricted kratom, 7-OH, or both, these products are still easy to buy online, in head shops, and yes… at gas stations.

Recently, a San Franciscan implied that I’d wasted the last two decades of my life living in Seattle. A sentiment I’ve never felt. Well, HOW ABOUT THESE EFFING WASHINGTON APPLES 🍏 Yesterday, @govferguson signed an Executive Order to support women in the workplace experiencing perimenopause and menopause. Today WA-based @pivotaldotcom announced its $215 investment in women’s health.

For over a decade, my professional focus has been in service of better health outcomes for women because as I shared with @sid_.allison just last night, societies that take care of women are more peaceful, more prosperous, and better educated. This is the society I want for all of our children. I’m so proud to live my values by living in Washington thanks to @jimaallison —and raise our boys here, too. by @aprilpride_
