Adèle Aproh is a French artist based in Paris whose intricate colored-pencil and pastel drawings construct dense fictional worlds populated almost entirely by women. Working slowly, inch by inch, she fills her compositions with crowds, costumes, repeated faces, gestures, and small narrative details, allowing each drawing to develop as she works. “I always work inch by inch on the paper, and generally I don’t really know what’s going next and how the final drawing will look like.”

Drawing has been central to Aproh’s life since childhood, becoming both a way to focus and a form of escape. “I see drawing as a meditative activity,” she explains.

Despite this early commitment, Aproh never attended art school. She studied business for five years and worked in communications before eventually leaving her corporate career to draw full time. “It made me pragmatic,” she says, while admitting that not having formal artistic training sometimes made her feel less legitimate and pushed her to work harder.

Her visual language grew partly from comics, where she became fascinated by pages filled with tiny details and overlapping stories. Her recent works explore women dressing, applying makeup, putting on wigs, preparing one another, and gathering for a performance that never actually takes place. These scenes explore identity, femininity, performance, preparation, and the presentation of the self, with the backstage becoming more important than the spectacle itself.

Throughout the conversation, Aproh reflects on financial uncertainty, vulnerability, self-doubt, discipline, and the pressure of turning something private into a profession. “It’s actually pretty intimidating being an artist, showing your work because it’s so personal.” For Aproh, choosing this uncertainty over the stability of her former corporate life is ultimately “the cost for freedom.” taken in Paris, France by @aprohdite

Join us at Scroll (@scroll.nyc) on Saturday, April 25 at 2 PM for an exhibition walkthrough of Adèle Aproh’s (@aprohdite) solo exhibition, Performance Cancelled.

Performance Cancelled, Adèle Aproh’s second solo exhibition at Scroll, stages the preparation scenes before a performance that will never occur. Aproh is drawn to the fleeting moments before an event, drawing her figures in the process of transformation without a clear indication of what they are preparing for. In her work, Aproh pulls fashion and runway archives, graphic novels, films, and other artworks into personal and narrative dialogues.

Performance Cancelled speaks about women’s bodies, their femininity, and therefore the artist’s own. Working in her largest scale to date, Aproh works over long periods of time, allowing for shifting and layered interpretations. Aproh states, “The performance suggested by the title never happens. It remains suspended. What becomes visible instead is the work that precedes it: the contained tension, the act of construction. The backstage takes center stage. If there is a spectacle, it exists precisely there.”

Scroll is pleased to announce the representation of Paris-based artist Adèle Aproh (b. 1996), coinciding with her second solo exhibition with the gallery, opening Friday, March 20.

Aproh brings together a unique visual lexicon to create fantastical, fictional worlds built up layer upon layer. Her drawings, executed expertly in colored pencil and pastel, tell stories within stories, unfolding a complex universe full of symbolism and references with surrealist absurdity. In her practice, Aproh addresses the construction of identity through different social codes, visualized through her protagonists’ outfits, facial features, and actions.

Performance Cancelled opens March 20 from 6-8pm. For more information, please email info@scroll.nyc.
