Louie’s Story: Part 3 🐾❤️

What happened to Louie is only part of his story. What comes next is just as important.

Over the past few weeks, you’ve followed Louie’s journey through surgery and the difficult decisions made to give him the best possible quality of life. Today, we’re focused on something different: his recovery.

Like many animals who come through our doors, Louie arrived needing significant medical care and a path forward. Every year, APS cares for animals facing the effects of abuse, neglect, illness, injury, abandonment, and other circumstances beyond their control. Most of these stories are never shared publicly, but each one requires careful evaluation, compassionate care, and thoughtful decision-making.

For Louie, that meant choosing the treatment option that offered the best opportunity for a healthy, comfortable future.

And that’s exactly what he’s working toward.

Every day, Louie is learning, adapting, and growing stronger. With ongoing medical care, support, and plenty of encouragement, he’s showing us what resilience truly looks like.

The Healthy Shelter Fund helps make care like this possible, supporting animals with emergency medical needs, lifesaving procedures, and critical veterinary treatment when those interventions align with their welfare and prognosis.

While every case is different, Louie’s story is a reminder of what’s possible when animals receive the care, resources, and support they need to move forward.

And thanks to this community, Louie’s next chapter is filled with healing, hope, and new possibilities. 🧡

🐾✨ **PET OF THE WEEK: VICKI** ✨🐾

The fun bus is fueled up, the snacks are packed, and Vicki is ready for her next big adventure! 🚌💖

At 4 years old, this affectionate, curious girl has mastered the art of enjoying life’s simple pleasures: leisurely neighborhood walks, sniffari adventures, delicious treats, and plenty of quality time with her favorite people.

Vicki isn’t interested in chasing tennis balls when she could be solving mysteries instead. As a self-appointed neighborhood detective, she’d rather follow an interesting scent trail, uncover hidden treasures, and take in the world one sniff at a time. 🔎🐾

She’s house-trained, gentle with kids, polite with other dogs, and brings an easygoing, drama-free energy wherever she goes. Add in her impeccable treat manners and love of back scratches, and you’ve got a companion who’s ready to make every day a little sweeter.

Vicki has been waiting since August and would love the chance to trade her kennel for comfy couches, daily walks, and a family to share life’s adventures with. Could you be the one to help this superstar start her next chapter? ❤️

four boys. four foster homes needed. 🐾

scrabby doo, smokey mountain, rocky and handsome are waiting at @aps_of_durham , and each one needs a soft landing for about 1–2 months.

🛋️ **scrabby doo:** heartworm treatment. a curious, affectionate couch potato in training who needs a quiet home and short potty walks only.
💙 **smokey mountain:** shelter stress. a big baby who’s fully convinced he’s a lap dog. two foster families already raved about him.
🧡 **rocky:** recovery. he arrived hurt, did a month of crate rest, and is now cleared for limited activity. he has never met a stranger.
💚 **handsome:** kennel stress. outside his kennel he’s a completely different dog: sweet, social and so treat-motivated. kids of all ages welcome.

**how to foster:**
1️⃣ make sure your foster application is on file with APS
2️⃣ book your foster pickup: apsbooking.as.me/schedule/ef36b622
3️⃣ not sure which boy fits your home? reach out and ask!

can’t foster right now? sharing this might be exactly what gets one of these boys out. 🧡

scrabby doo is looking for a couch to call his own 🛋️

he’s heartworm positive, so he needs a quiet, comfy home to relax during treatment. that means short potty walks only and no running or roughhousing. he’s affectionate, curious, friendly and loves people. a calm home with kids 6+ who are ready to embrace the couch potato lifestyle would be perfect.

ideally 1–2 months. could that be you? 💚

meet smokey mountain, a big baby who’s 100% convinced he’s a lap dog 💙

he’s playful, smart and so affectionate, and two short-term fosters have already raved about him. the shelter is stressing him out and he needs time to decompress, with daily walks, structure and lots of positive reinforcement. an active home with kids 8+ would be ideal.

at least 1 month. he’s ready when you are 🥹

rocky has been through a lot, and he’s still the happiest boy around 🧡

he arrived hurt and has come so far. he’s fun-loving, affectionate and has never met a stranger. he’s cleared for limited activity, taken in The Animal Protection Society of Durham by @aps_of_durham

🚨 URGENT: Our pups need your help!🐶❤️

We are critically low on squeeze cheese and peanut butter, two of our dogs’ all-time favorite treats that play a huge role in their daily care and enrichment!

These tasty goodies help us:
🐾 Reward and reinforce positive behavior during training
🐾 Keep dogs calm and distracted during vaccinations and medical exams
🐾 Enrich kennel time with stuffed KONGs and treat puzzles
🐾 Build trust and confidence with shy or nervous pups
🐾 Make every shelter day a little brighter for dogs waiting for homes

If you’d like to help, donations can be dropped off at our Yard Sale tomorrow starting at 8:30 AM. We would be so grateful for your support!

Can’t make it out? You can send supplies directly through our Amazon Wish List:
🛒 [Shop Our Amazon Wish List](https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/34JIO0YQJ5CMW/ref=hz_ls_biz_ex)

Every jar, can, and squeeze tube helps us care for the dogs who depend on us. Thank you for helping keep tails wagging! ❤️🐾
