Hundreds of faculty, coaches, and students stood together in Harrisburg last week to rally for a 15% increase in state funding for all of public higher education. Yesterday the Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education Board of Governors approved a request for a 5.5% increase.

On Monday, hundreds of Pennsylvania students, faculty, staff, and working people gathered on the steps of the Capitol in Harrisburg to tell our elected officials: It’s time for affordable college NOW!

We stood with our partners at @apscuf , @aftunion , @pa.aaup, @neatoday , @seiu_org , @psea_org, @project26pa, and more than a dozen unions and organizations to demand that state lawmakers increase funding for public higher education by 15% and pass the Pennsylvania Promise.

We rallied on Monday because college in the Commonwealth cannot only be for people who can afford it. But our fight continues.

Student speakers from yesterday's #AffordableCollegeNow rally:

1️⃣ Ian Hall, a senior at @pennwedinboro, is a future educator. "I do not want my students to tell me that college is not for them because they cannot afford it," he said.

2️⃣ "We want to make an impact on society," Ethan Rapp, PennWest Edinboro senior, said. "Please, help us make that difference." He talked about the need to work multiple jobs and the toll it takes on students.

3️⃣ Pennsylvania's state-funded universities are preparing the next generation of professionals that will serve our communities, said Hannah Rake, a student at @pennwclarion. We need to invest in them, she said.

4️⃣ Taniya Fuller, student at @shippensburgu University, talked about the role of chance in her ability to pursue higher education as costs increase. Lower- and middle-income students need the assistance of our government to become the leaders they are meant to be, she said. "We don't want to leave our future up to chance," she said.

5️⃣ We should pour into our future, not take away, said Esther Brown, student at Shippensburg University. She talked about how paying for college can be more stressful than the material learned. by @apscuf

Union leader speakers from yesterday's #AffordableCollegeNow rally:

1️⃣ For decades, Pennsylvania has failed to invest what its public college and universities need, Todd Wolfson, president of @aaupnational, said. More of the cost has shifted onto students and their families, he said.

2️⃣ Public education is a public good from pre-K to graduate school, said Noel Candelaria, vice president of @neatoday. A student's opportunity to pursue an education should be determined by their dreams and their potential, not by the size of their family's bank account, he said.

3️⃣ "If we mean opportunity for all, we need to fund opportunity for all," Randi Weingarten, president of @aftunion, said.

4️⃣ "History has shown us that young people will always be a driving force behind change," Angela Ferritto, president of Pennsylvania AFL-CIO, said. "So be proud of what you're here fighting for, not just for yourself but for the next generations to come after you." by @apscuf
