APTA returned to Chicago—the site of its first EXPO in 1981—to welcome nearly 14,000 attendees, 700 exhibitors, and 30 news outlets to the 2026 TRANSform & EXPO, October 4-7.

A mixed-media opening session, complete with a live blues band, paid tribute to APTA and Chicago’s history of innovation in business, the arts, and transportation. Calling Chicago “the city that built America,” APTA President and CEO Paul P. Skoutelas welcomed and thanked the audience.

“This has been a momentous year,” said Skoutelas, “and we have shown our leaders in Washington and across the country that public transportation drives the economy.”

APTA concluded TRANSform & EXPO, held Oct. 4–7, in Chicago. The event featured ~700 exhibitors and drew 13,700 attendees, including public transit leaders, private-sector partners, policymakers, and international delegations. Taking place every 3 years, #aptaEXPO gives the public transportation industry an opportunity to see new technologies and share practices that improve service for riders.

“The technologies on the EXPO floor and the discussions in our TRANSform sessions gave transit agencies and businesses practical tools to improve service, operate more efficiently, and plan for the future. Our industry is ready to put those lessons to work for riders and the communities we serve,” said APTA CEO Paul P. Skoutelas.

Several themes emerged across the exhibit floor and sessions:

+ Rail Innovation: Exhibitors showcased battery-electric passenger rail, highlighted U.S. rail manufacturing and presented future light rail equipment concepts, including longer trains.

+ AI and Smart Technology: Exhibitors and speakers focused on AI tools that agencies are already putting into service, including applications for predictive rail maintenance, automated dispatching for on-demand and micromobility services, connected transit networks, and real-time rider information.

+ Regional Connectivity: Tech providers demonstrated how integrated fare payment and coordinated service planning can help riders travel more easily.

+ Zero-Emission Buses and Fleets: Manufacturers introduced new battery-electric bus models and electric shuttle concepts to the U.S. market.

+ Transit-Oriented Development: Sessions examined how real estate partnerships around stations and transit hubs can generate revenue and support regional funding needs.

+ Federal Investment and Policy: Agency leaders and policymakers discussed the federal Capital Investment Grants program and the next surface transportation reauthorization, including the role of sustained federal investment in advancing projects like those on display.

+ Workforce Development: APTA’s Transit Industry Job Fair connected hundreds of job seekers with public transit agencies and private-sector companies that are hiring. by @apta_transit

Today, APTA released a new report showing American households can save an average of $14,100 a year by owning one fewer vehicle and riding public transportation.

The report, 'Public Transit Saves American Families Money', finds households that choose public transportation over driving can save anywhere from $12,000 to more than $18,000 a year, depending on the city.

Since 2019, the average new car price has risen 36 percent and used car prices have climbed 60 percent driven by tariffs, high interest rates, supply chain disruptions, and a growing chip shortage tied to demand from AI data centers.

Gas prices have risen to $4.61 per gallon as of late September 2026, up from $2.91 in January 2025, as the Strait of Hormuz crisis pushes up oil prices worldwide.

Meanwhile, monthly public transit fares at most public transit agencies have not increased since 2022.

“Using public transportation is one of the simplest ways families can save money every month,” said APTA President and CEO Paul P. Skoutelas. “When you add up gas, insurance, repairs, and parking, the savings can be significant. That is money that can go toward rent, groceries, health care, and other things families need.”

@senatorberniemoreno (R-OH) visited @yourmetrobus in Akron, OH, Oct. 6, for a tour of the agency’s new, federally funded maintenance and operations facility, offering an opportunity to see firsthand how public transportation investment supports local communities.

During the visit, Sen. Moreno also got behind the wheel of one of Metro’s 40-foot @gilligllc buses, navigating a series of cones used for driver training.

Visits like this give elected officials a direct look at the infrastructure, equipment, and people that keep public transportation moving. From modern maintenance facilities and vehicle fleets to the drivers and technicians who keep service running safely and reliably, transit agency tours help connect federal funding decisions to the everyday work of delivering mobility to millions of Americans. #ThatsTransit by @apta_transit
