Calling in the village!

Join us for an afternoon of Celtic stories Sunday, Oct. 4th on the shore of the Great Salt Pond.

This will also be an opportunity to learn some simple ceremonial protocols for communicating with the non-human world I’ve gleaned from the Mū Hawaiian tradition as shared by my friend and mentor, Ke’oni Hanalei of @pohala_hawaiian_botanicals.

This gathering is offered as an antidote to the extractive nature of American culture that so often views nature as something to be consumed, and is sponsored by the McAleer Fund. Mac (Tom McAleer) was a plein-air painter who understood the spirit of the giveaway. I’m sure many of you reading this were gifted a painting by him, or even found one propped on a stone wall with the paint still wet.

Please bring a notebook and pen. There will be a writing component that will weave into the creation of a communal work of art.

It gives me great joy to offer this to the Block Island community. Mac was a huge inspiration to so many, and I’m honored to be part of carrying his legacy for future generations.

All ages are welcome. Feel free to just show up, but if you know you are definitely in you can register by emailing islandfiberarts@gmail.com.

Tomorrow at the Island Free Library. If it’s not raining, we’ll be outside in the garden.

This is the time for this story. Join me tomorrow and find out how it’s calling to you at this particular time as the collective descends into chaos. Let’s do it with some style and wisdom. That’s how the stories can help us.

All ages welcome. taken in Island Free Library by @aquaodyssey

Join us this Friday for a telling of the Grimm’s fairy tale the Earth Gnome. Scotch Beach, 7pm. Hopefully there will be a fire and a musical guest.

All are welcome to this free event. Donations are welcome, but not expected.

I love how these stores weave their way into the community landscape and am excited to see how the Earth Gnome ripples through. taken in Block Island by @aquaodyssey

Join me for the first Hedge School session of the Block Island 2026 season! This Wednesday 8/12 I’ll be sharing the story of Nanaue the Shark Man. Told to me firsthand by a local years ago in Waipi’o Valley, on Hawai’i island, this story wove its way into my life in ways I never could have expected. This is the story that made me understand stories are alive.

Sharks have been everywhere around the island this summer. Come find out what they what these magnificent, often feared, apex predators want to say to you.

Location: Shark Fin Beach (north of Scotch in front of Shark Rock)

Time: 7PM

If you don’t want to sit in the sand bring a blanket or chair.

Hedge School is donation-based. If you want to drop a few ducats in my treasure chest, it would be most appreciated, though not necessary. The most important thing is to show up! taken in Block Island by @aquaodyssey

Last night I sat @virginicapizza and drew this poster for this summer’s storytelling Hedge School. Inspired by the restaurant’s devotion to local, seasonal food, and the craft required to transform ingredients into art, I realized that the first poster, generated by AI on Canva, would just not do.

I believe in the handmade life. I believe that the work of our hands is how we give back to what nature gives us-for free. An AI poster is totally antithetical to what I want to create with Hedge School this summer, and I’m embarrassed I even generated the first image, but well, you know, who has time in this busy world to draw?

I made the time. So can you.

Hedge School is not just about hearing a story and being changed by it, though that will happen. It’s about what we make with our own two hands after, and a way to give the voice of the land back to itself.

Come open your ears to the subtle currents of the wind and the tingling earth. I’m planning our first gathering for later this week. Stay tuned. And take a look at the 2nd slide and tell me, which one of these images speaks to your soul? taken in Block Island by @aquaodyssey
