Training scientific divers, future marine stewards; shaping the Blue Economy one student at a time

Our founder Kory shares the powerful story behind Aquatic Futures Foundation, tracing how centuries of systemic exclusion created a gap between Black communities and water spaces.

This history directly shapes our mission today through swimming lessons, ocean education, and creating welcoming aquatic environments to train future scientific divers. This is the why behind everything we do.

Huge thanks to @dencilrollejr for this incredible video!

Summer may be ending but unfortunately the ocean is just heating up. Two massive warming patterns are colliding in the Pacific, and the implications for California’s coast are profound.

Learn more about the climate events affecting our ecosystems and infrastructure in our new LinkedIn Article. Find the link in our bio!

All good marine science research starts on land!

From conducting dry runs of transects and counts, to preparing research slates, gathering supplies, familiarizing themselves with study species, and ensuring they write down metadata and dive details, our students practice and discuss everything prior to diving in!

Preparation and intention are key when air, time, and communication are limited underwater!

As Scientific Divers, sometimes research occurs in less than stunning conditions.

Along the California coastline, low visibility, high surge, and strong currents are all factors that our cohort has had to learn to manage during their training.

Our students have practiced and trained to complete tasks and run necessary skills and drills in these scenarios, so that they are ready to assist with essential conservation and restoration work, even when conditions aren’t picture perfect.

Learning how to communicate and keep track of your buddy in low visibility, enter and exit in waves and surge, and navigate effectively ensure that safety is of the utmost priority during every dive.

Want to learn more about water safety and ocean awareness? Register for our upcoming Ocean Comfort Course! Link in bio!

On June 13, our Scientific Diving Cohort participated in the LA County Underwater Unit’s Rocks, Rips, and Reefs Program at White Point Beach.

This public service program is designed to educated and updates free dive and scuba divers on seasonal environmental awareness considerations for diving in LA County.

Our students learned about swell and surf patterns, site assessment, and safe practices for local dive sites such as entries and exists, hazards, and bathymetry.

Thank you to the LA County Underwater Unit for educating our students and helping them be prepared to assist and lead conservation and restoration activities off the California coast!

To become certified Scientific Divers our students must complete 100 hours of theoretical and practical training. That means a lot of time underwater!

Check out these highlights from our June Catalina Island dive where our students practiced skills and drills, navigation, underwater communication, species identification, and more!
